Top Gear Acceleration
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:59:14 AM »
Hi all.

I am considering the Trophy along with the new FJR and possible the K1600GT.

Anyone care to comment on the Trophy's top gear acceleration compared to the FJR?

I used to ride a 2004 FJR and felt it was pretty quick and the 2013 version makes a little more power - more than the Trophy. It still only has 5 gears and the Trophy has a real tall top (6th) gear, so in top my money would be on the FJR (but I haven't ridden the Trophy yet ....).

My brother rode the K1600GT back to back with the Trophy and in his opinion the K1600 feels livelier than the Trophy.

In my view (having got a Trophy) owned R1200RT and K1300GT pus long test ride on 1600 the Trophy is much the same as the 1600 in top, better than 1200 and worse than 1300. Never ridden the FJR 1300 though.

Trom100,

Just the kind of feedback I need.

The R1200RT is on my long list, but not sure it will satisfy my performance desires.

Having owned a K1200S, I really loved that engine and almost bit on a K1300GT, but the knee bend was too severe.

Can't wait to try the Trophy.

Interesting article in this months edition of Ride in the UK where they took a Trophy, an old Pan ST1300 and an R1200RT out for a couple of days on the roads in Cornwall. Not surprisingly, I suppose, the Pan owners preferred their Pan, the RT owners preferred their RT but the third rider who normally rode a FJR1300 preferred the Trophy.   The RT owners reckoned their RT was much sportier than the Trophy - I don't agree but it does take time to get used to a new bike.

Here's a link that provides performance stats on many bikes including the FJR1300:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/performancedata/122_0108_pdataresults/

So according to this magazine, the 03 FJR1300 went from 60-80 mph in top gear in 3.65 seconds.

According to MOTORRAD 11/08/12 magazine, the Triumph Trophy 1200 takes about 5.5 seconds to go from 100-140 km/hr and I'm assuming that was in top gear. So… that's 62-87 mph. If they had done the 60-80 mph time it would have been about 4.4 seconds.

It's may not be totally accurate, but will give you some idea how it compares to the FJR.
