Quarantine Maintenance

With spring here in Chicago but the weather just getting warm enough to ride, wouldn't you know it we are all under house arrest.

Not having done any end of season maintenance because of an early winter, I decided to roll the Trophy out of the garage and do my Spring maintenance.

I changed the oil, 9,000 miles on this change and it was very dirty, installed a new filter, and did what I do every oil change and although reluctant to start a heated discussion did the following.

I removed and replaced and lubed both the brake pedal pivot bolt and the gear shift pivot bolt.  I do this every oil change because the time it takes to replace them is probably 1/10th the time it takes to extract a broken one, and a lot cheaper because I do it in my back yard, with my tools.

The entire job, oil, filter, fill, and bolts, start to finish was 1.75 hours.

Just a suggestion for those who have never pondered what a pain in the butt it would be to have one break on the road. They have gotten a little more expensive but still under $13 each.

After lubricating prior to installing the new pivot bolts, do you think it's necessary to replace them every year?  Doesn't the lubrication of them every year negate the need to replace them?  I know that they're not much money but I'd rather not throw out something IF it doesn't need to be replaced.  Just wondering?

I have just done mine, the last time I did mine was August 2018, just before I made a 5000 mile trip across Europe. I made a promises to myself to do it every 12 months, so was very remiss in not doing it last year, but being in lockdown, I have just done it, and re greased the drop link bearings, lots of time now to do the odd jobs on her, I only get weekends normally, and want to ride in the nice weather.

My thoughts on these bolts are that I cannot see the fatigue in the metal when I inspect them.  In my head I have pondered the pain in the butt and the cost of a tow, paying a mechanic to extract the broken part, and installing the new bolt while on the road.  I figure a minimum of $300, with the potential damage to the bike during the tow.

I can change the bolts every year for the next 10 years before I equal the cost of this happening once, and I will cuss a lot less.    

I may be wasting money, but I have some peace of mind.    I figure I save a lot by doing most of my drinking at home, so I can splurge on my motorcycles.

Obviously if you continue to install the same (original) screws. You will never drive smoothly.

The original screws are a bigger sweet than Triumph. He did not take into account, nor does he continue to take into account, that it could not be that a piece of steel with an embedded washer has a thread of 1 centimeter in the same steel.

Logically, sooner or later, it will split, just where its thread ends.

The ideal is to drill a hole in the same steel (pivot) or whatever it is called and drill a hole so that a screw with the appropriate thread passes and the problem is solved.

For the part of the screw where it will rotate freely within the steel (pivot), it should not have a thread.

Of course, each maintenance lubricates the internal part of both pedals. Including the internal part of the screw. Nothing more than that.

Throughout the forum there are several open posts that talk about this.

I also saw that there is a method like the one I described above, that they do the same as me, but once they drill it, they take advantage of it and in the same steel (pivot) they thread it, so the screw will continue to be embedded in steel (pivot ) I am not in favor of it.

I prefer that the pedal and screw have room to rotate freely.

No problem, we all have stuff in life that worries us, these bolts are just one of mine and I am not resourceful enough to engineer and produce a better solution.
