Top case lights

Hello gang,
I recently mounted a Shad SH48 top case, and purchased a light kit from Twisted Throttle. The installation instructions seem pretty clear, however the wire tapping........ not so much. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi JerseyJeff,

You didn't say which Light Kit you bought but I assume it's the Shad LED-SH48-T-TS (CG) Kit

The rear light of the Trophy is easily removed after unscrewing the white nylon nut underneath
the pillion seat.  Withdraw the rear light unit and you will find the Plug & Socket connector.

The Multi Plug from the Trophy rear light unit plugs into the socket of the Trophy harness.

You then need to decide where to splice the connections in to the Trophy wiring.

The wires of the Trophy Light Unit are coloured differently to those of the Trophy Harness 

The wiring colours at the Trophy Harness Socket and at the Rear Light Multi Plug are :

Main Harness Side ( Socket )

Tail Light & License Plate +ve	Yellow
Brake Light +ve	Green / Purple
Ground -ve	Black
Offside / Right Indicator +ve	Green / White
Nearside / Left Indicator +ve	Green / Red

Rear Light Unit Sub Harness Side ( Plug )

Tail Light & License Plate +ve	Red
Brake Light +ve	Blue
Ground -ve	Black
Offside / Right Indicator +ve	Yellow
Nearside / Left Indicator +ve	Yellow / Green

( Where two colours are listed the first is the main colour,
and the second is the colour of its stripe ).

This is the connector plug for the Triumph light unit :



From the Admore SH48 Light Kit instructions :



You should now be able to work out where to connect the wires.

NOTE : The reference to "Canbus-equipped motorcycles" may or may not apply.
The problem that could be encountered is that if you connect the Admore RED wire
to the Trophy Tail Light circuit, this may result in the Trophy Cruise control
being disabled, as unexpected voltage could be seen on the interconnected Brake light circuit
( the LED's are combined to provide dual brightness ), as the Cruise control is deactivated
when the brake lights are applied.

There may not be a problem at all, so I would start by connecting the Admore RED wire
to the Trophy Tail Light circuit, but with a temporary connection until you have chance
to get out and test that the Cruise control still works. 

If the Cruise control IS disabled after making this connection, disconnect it
from the Trophy Tail light circuit, and connect it to some other positive supply
that becomes Live when the Ignition is switched on.

Finally, if you want to make a really neat "Plug and Play" installation,
I found a source for the exact Multi plug connector used for the Trophy Rear Light.
They are in the U.S. ( and also ship to the UK for a very reasonable price ! ).

If you buy the male plug, female socket, and pins you can make up your own
interface lead with the Admore wires connected in between the two for a
"Plug and Play" installation.  Here are the details :

Thanks for the reply, I see you do offer a lot of advise here, and I'm sure you must have a vast amount of experience.

Yes the kit was the one you referred to, sorry I should have been more clear.

That said, I have minimal experience and thought it shouldn't be too hard, but I was totally lost with your explanation, sorry. I'm sure it was accurate, it's probably just my lack of knowledge, that's making it difficult to understand. Are you saying I can choose which side of the connector plug to splice into, and that will determine the color of the wires, because of the inconsistent wiring colors ??

No problem,

It's entirely up to you as to where you make the connection,
and will make no difference to the operation of the lights,
so you can choose whichever seems the easiest for you to access.

What I was trying to explain is that if you remove the rear light unit
you will see that the wiring from it goes to a multi plug connector.
The individual wires from the Light Unit to the plug are as stated in my first message.

On the other side of that plug, ( the Trophy Harness side ),
the wires are different colours, again as stated in my first message.

So by way of example, for connecting the Admore Brake light wire ( Blue )
you would either connect it to the Blue wire from the Light Unit,
or to the Green wire with Purple Stripe on the Trophy harness side of that connector.

It's a matter of personal preference but I always try not to chop the main harness wires,
and either splice into any sub harness, such as the one from that connector to the light unit,
or make up a "plug and Play" lead as described previously, so that it is easier to return
things to the way they were if you need to, but that's just me !

Back for another question. Can any one tell me where this goes ? It appears to get plugged into something, but i don't see where or what ??

Looking closely at that Photo are those the four "Dip Switches"
that are mentioned in the Troubleshooting section of the instructions :

Ensure that all 4 dip switches are in the “On” position
(top position with cables pointing down).

I have no idea what they do, other than maybe allow
the individual circuits or features to be turned ON or OFF !
