    Form over Function?

    Hi All,

I have sworn an oath of solitude until the pestilence is purged from this land so to this end have a lot of time!

I, for the first time, and following the step by step guidelines given on this forum removed all the plastic from my bike and whats more managed to join it all together again, pause for applause.  I did think it may be nice to 'stealth' out my ride with black fastenings.

I ordered M5 x 16mm black aluminium dome head screws.  When they arrived I noticed the screw heads had about half the surface area of the originals, see attached photo.  They did come with large washers.  The Allen key is also smaller, not 5mm as standard but 3mm.

    My questions are:

    1.  Should I worry about the reduced contact area?
    2.  Will my Triumph mechanic be pissed off that some screws require a 5mm Allen wrench and some a 3mm?
    3.  I realise adding the washer will get me back to the full contact area but again will this be a negative issue for maintenance?
    4.  What do you think it looks like!

If you like them, I also like them, if you don't have a problem having to take two different allen keys to discount fairings. Well worth it.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hi GarminDave,

They look good on the video and I bet they look even better "live" !

As they are mostly only tightened to 3 NM, and you have an appropriate size washer under
their heads I can't see it making much mechanical difference, provided the washers are fairly rigid.
( If they were soft silicon for example, then over time the screw heads might
have a tendency to get pulled into the hole of the panel they are securing ).

If ALL of the screws that need to be removed to get the Fairing off have been changed
then I wouldn't worry about the different tool size needed - the mechanic would not usually use
a standard Allen key for the job, but a screwdriver type tool, and I'd be surprised if they didn't have
a 3mm size - but it might be worth checking in advance just in case !

The original Trophy 16mm long Fairing screws ( part Number T3330941 )
are listed on the World of Triumph web site at 5.44 EACH  :005:

That's a high price for a single screw, and I previously tried to find matching alternatives
with the same size button head, with a 5mm hex, just to have a few spares for those
that invariably get lost, but I couldn't find any anywhere,  so if anyone knows of a supplier  ? .......  :028:

I was talking to a manufacturer and they had similar ones. But I didn't like them.

So I found in a house a scrapyard, a package with all the screws for the fairings and many others for the Trophy.

Hmmm...noticed hanging around this forum, there's always something new or improved to perform on this bike! :028:
Looks like next month, when I remove all the body work to perform some maintenance and add some accessories, I'll probably be priming and painting all the hardware....err.... Fixings!

I use Dave Middleton of Batley for all of my stainless fasteners. They do an M5 x 16 long button head for 50p each plus vat and post. I think the hex will be 4mm. They also do washers to fit.
Their catalogue is worth a look through in these difficult times and certainly beats anything that is on the telly
I have no affiliation to this company other than being a customer.

It looks good!  I went about it with a powdercoat gun.  Remove, sandblast, mount in piece of sheet metal and shoot it.  Came out well, but pita.  Be careful on that stealth thing....it can take over  :002:

Mine don't.  In fact last time I removed the plastic I found two extra ones when I'd finished   :745:
