Rubber replacement grips on heated grips

I’ve just swapped the rubber grips on my heated grips as they were deteriorated.

I bought a set of standard rubber which come on a plastic mount tube. They are the same rubber grips as in the heated type.

Parts Bought off eBay TRIUMPH TROPHY 1215 TIGER 800 EXPLORER THROTTLE & LH HAND GRIP T2042464 T2042454

Firstly On the bike I removed the bar end weight and Slightly rolled back the inside and outside edges to free the glue, then sprayed the grip with silicone Spray (not the inside where the wires are) then starting on the inside I rolled back the grip and pulled it over itself till it came off.

You could carefully cut them Off but I was just practising.

On the new grips I did exactly the same, as above, sprayed them with silicone and pulled them off over themselves. Probably do same with washing up liquid.
Making a note of the notches and location where they came from.

New grip minus tube inside out.

Firstly spray over the wires with a weak washing solution to act as a Lubricant.
Make a note of the notches on the handle bar grip base to match the inside out grip.

On the New rubber grip Spray silicone inside (which is the inside when turned out) and turn the first bit of rubber inside itself to start it off.

Place the grip against a the end of the bar and gently stretch over the first bit. Now slide the grip From over Itself onto the wires locating the cut out with the plastic sleeve.

Finally adjust the grip and stretch into place ticking in the inner edge in the groove.

Lastly I wished the grip in soapy solution to remove the silicone.

All that is required now is for the inner water to evaporate And if you want and injection of rubber glue to help secure.

This could be assisted by heating the grips.

I’ve used no glue and my grips are great.

This is what I’ve done. How you choose to tackle it is Up to you.

    It saved me
Allot of money replacing the whole grips.

Cool! :028:  Great How To and pictures of the process.  I happen to still have the originals since I fitted the heated grips myself.

Just an aside, my grips are like new underneath the Grip Puppies [2nd set] that have been on since day one. :028: :028:

I had puppies for a time. It would take a lot longer to feel the heat and keep it with puppies on.

While I have not yet done this on my Trophy, I have used grip puppies on my bikes including those with heated grips. I install them by holding the grip puppy inside a plastic cup while spraying the inside of the grip puppy with hairspray (the cup limits overspray). I find they slip on over existing grips with little trouble, but a bit of oomph. I've had no trouble feeling the heat through the grip puppies.

Ditto on the Grip Puppies. No problem feeling the heat come through from the heated grips. This is on my GS as I have not fitted heated grips to my SE yet. I think that heated gloves may be a LOT easier and less expensive than heated grips on the SE. I believe in the motto KISS : Keep It Simple Stupid! I don't believe in over complication when a simple solution will work, besides, living in California the need for heated grips is quite limited.
