I need troubleshooting help
« on: July 07, 2020, 11:58:49 PM »
Hi everyone, I just joined the Triumph club.  I just purchased a Trophy 1200 didn't realize it was having electrical issues.  My first demon was a battery that was constantly draining after riding.  I have put a voltmeter up to the battery and while idling, it registers about 12.5 volts or so, when I rev the engine it jumps up to the mid 13 volts.  There are after market led lights on it and I have taken them off battery.  The horn also does not work.  Is this a starter,  rectifier or alternator issue?  Anything I can do to narrow it down?  My last and first bike was a Honda Nighthawk and ironically it was plagued with the exact same issue and that turned out to be a bad starter.

Hi nytriumphtro and :400: to the Forum.

This Forum is dedicated to the latest Trophy model ( 2012 onwards ),
although everyone is welcome here, and discussions on Triumph Models
other than the latest Trophy can ( and should - to avoid any confusion )
be held in this Section : "On Two Wheels - Bikers Chat"

Consequently , the availablity of our Members to help with advice, or spare parts will be limited.

There are also other Forums and Groups dedicated to the previous Trophy Model,
that you might find more helpful - Google "triumphrat.net/trophy 3 & 4"
and Search Facebook for "Triumph Trophy 1991-2003"   :028:

Although it's labeled T3 Sport /Touring, your 1200 4 cylinder is based on the 900 3 cylinder Trophy of the era.

I didn't see a specific forum for the 1200 4 cylinder.
The 3 cylinder bikes of the era had Reg/rec issues, and there's lots of threads on upgrading that if it turns out to be your problem. Some indicators of failing charging system are wonky gauges.
