It had been too long since my last camping trip, so I decided to make a short visit to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan last week. My destination was Copper Harbor, the northern most point in the State, on the shore of Lake Superior.

My first stop was a rest area at the border with Wisconsin. This area historically has been important for its large deposits of both copper and iron ore.

The U.P. is densely wooded, and lightly populated, which makes for some great riding. Recent heavy rains meant the Rivers were swollen with run-off.

By the time I reached Fort Wilkins State Park around 3:30 in the afternoon, I was amazed to discover that only one campsite of 160 was still available. Needless to say, it was not a preferred site, but at that point, I was in no position to complain. I set up camp, and headed out for a delightful ride on the twisty Rte. 26, to and from Eagle River, after which I grabbed some dinner and retired to the campground.

Nice.  I finally have pretty red oil in mine and ready to ride.  Just have to start it by jumping the relay because there is something wrong in the starter switch wiring somewhere.  But it's RIDEABLE!!!  Looks like you had a great ride!

After a surprisingly good night's sleep, I headed into town for my morning cup of dark roast, which I enjoyed on the waterfront.

Given how crowded the campground was, I decided to break camp and head back towards home. As I was leaving the Keewenau Peninsula, I stopped to take a look at this attraction. I don't think that there are too many places in the Continental U.S. that receive more annual snowfall than here!

My last stop before crossing back into Wisconsin was a visit to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness. Not much by The Rocky Mountains standard, but significant in the Midwest.  :153:

The weather was magnificent for the two days and nearly 600 miles of riding, plus the camping kit finally got some use again.  :028:
