    Thermostat

Being retired and living on a fixed income,  I'm wondering ( just curious ) if there is a cheaper auto thermostat that will substitute for the Triumph item ?

I believe the thermostat is 52 mm in diameter.  Anyone have a picture ?  The pic in the parts diagram isn't that clear.

I've spent some time yesterday & today looking for an auto radiator cap that will fit the TTSE and I can't find one, which surprised me.   Years ago I found one to fit my Honda ST1100, but no cigar as far as the TTSE is concerned.  So I'm getting ready to shell out about $14 plus shipping for the OEM TTSE cap.  I might have to ask the Boss for a loan and work out some type of payment plan.

Somewhere I have read that they are compatible with the first generation Nissan Primers and Nissan Almera. But I can't verify it.

Apart from "Made in Germany" etc. are there any other markings or numbers
on the "Triumph" Thermostat and Radiator Cap that could be "Googled" ?

Without other Part Numbers to cross reference,
it may be possibe to identify an alternative Thermostat
if the following information can be obtained :

Type of Thermostat : Conventional or Bypass ?
Flange Diameter ( the Upper / largest flange )
Foot Diameter ( the lower flange )
Height - Distance between Upper Flange and Lower Foot
    Opening Temperature ( 88 C )
Fitted with "Jiggle Pin" or not ? ( Service Manual describes a "Bleed Hole" ).

I have a hunch the thermostat is a standard 52 mm diameter thermostat, since the gasket is that diameter.  But I haven't verified that yet.  Anyone have a pic ?

The service manual days it's a 190 degree thermostat.  Personally, I would replace it with a 180 degree unit.  I know of no other MC that uses a 190 degree unit.  Almost all use a 180 degree, except for Kawasaki that use a 140 degree in the Concours C-14.

BTW, the thermostat temp doesn't determine the temp the motor runs at, it's the temp the thermostat starts to open at - after that, the sky's the limit.
