Final drive oil amount
« on: October 26, 2020, 07:08:16 pm »
Does anyone have the specs for the exact amount of Final drive oil?  Or is it just fill it until it reaches the bottom of the fill hole?

Aye, it is a small amount, I'm changing mine every year, one 1L bottle would last you a good few years. :002:

My advice is to go and make a cup of tea once you do have oil coming out of that hole, if you just bung the plug straight back in, it maybe over filled, resulting in higher pressure/oil passing the seal once the bike is on the road.

If memory serves it is less than 8 ounces so a quart bottle of good stuff will last a long time.
Factory says change once and never again. I will be doing mine at 20k intervals. Too inexpensive of maintenance not to.

It's a no brainer really, to replace this oil fairly regularly shall we say, it's easy to do, drain and fill plugs have both been fitted after all.

I don't often disagree with the workshop manual but on this I do,.....apart from them hoping that you will be ordering an whole new driver shaft in the future, I can't see why they say only change it once.

To answer the original questions :

Does anyone have the specs for the exact amount of Final drive oil?

Assuming the Service Manual is correct : 0.17 Litres, which is 5.75 US Fluid Ounces.

There is a previous Topic where a Member reports "filling" with 0.24 Litres ! :

Change final drive oil.

Or is it just fill it until it reaches the bottom of the fill hole?

YES ! - If you've drained the Oil so it can be changed for fresh Oil,
there will always be some left inside that doesn't drain out,
so if the total specified was added, it would be over-filled.

The bike should be on level ground, with the rear wheel off the gorund ( such as on the Centre Stand )
and the Oil filled ( or topped up ) until it is level with the bottom of the filler hole.

Cheers  :821:

I suspect that the techs at the dealerships just bung the refill plug back in as soon as they see the oil overflowing, they just don't have the time to wait for it to stop dripping.
Mine had been overfilled, pressure builds up at speed and I ended up with oil on my drive afterwards. Not had any problems since I give it a good half hour before putting the plug back in.
