Will the USB port power my GPS?

    Hi Gang,

I connected my GPS to the USB port in the glove box and there does not seem to be enough power to run my GPS. The unit will power up, but it will then immediately power down.

I used an adapter in the 12V socket to plug my USB cord into that, but had the same result.

My GPS is a Nuvi and perhaps requires too much juice?

Do I need a data cord vs a charge only cord?

Any thoughts on how to make this work?

    Thank you.

Previously I tried powering my phone off the USB outlet in the glove box, with Spotify, Waze and Bubbler running.  It couldn't keep up.  Waze is a power hog, but when I switched to google maps, the USB  outlet still struggled.

I had no problem powering up from the 12 VDC outlet, with the same apps running.  I've since mounted a remote USB power port on the left-side handlebar and it works fine.

    Thanks brenchley.

How did you set up the remote USB?

    Simple install?

    Thank you.

I have two waterproof USB ports in front of the tank just behind the steering head hex nut and both are 2.1A output.  They are run through a fuse block that is switched and only powered when the engine is running so nothing I have in use will drain the battery.  My GPS battery is always at full charge and my phone mounted on the S-P Connect wireless dock is always at full charge when I get where I'm going.  1A will charge the device, or power it, but sometimes it won't keep a charge in a device while it's being used.

Does the bike need to be running for the 12V  outlet to work? I had the key in the on position but the bike was not running.

    Owners Handbook, Page 81 :

The glove box socket and pillion socket ( if fitted )
are live when the engine is running.

    Cheers  :821:

     Yeah,
    Thank you.

I pulled power from the switched source used to power the glove box 12 VDC socket.  So the waterproof remote USB port is only live when the motor's running.
