Fuel Gauge

Hopefully those with more knowledge of the bike will know the answer to this.

Bought my Trophy at the back end of last year, but due to busy circumstances poor weather and lockdowns, it has only had a couple of small trips out. During one of these trips i put a small amount of fuel in the bike, which registered on the gauge, but as it has been sitting in the shed, and i had a couple of gallons of fuel in a can I put this in the bike, but now when i start the bike the fuel gauge has gone off.

Have I confused it, and if I take the bike for a ride will it sort itself out during what would normally be the period of time it takes for the fuel gauge to respond following a normal fill up?

Under normal circumstances it can take a bit of time after rolling, for the fuel gauge to register correctly after adding fuel.  Mine usually takes 15-20 seconds after feet up to indicate fuel quantity.

Mine also takes about the same amount of time to register that I've topped off.  I believe that's how it is for all of us.

My concern is that the fuel gauge is showing no bars at all having put fuel in and not ridden just started the engine a few times, whereas when I filled it previously the bars went up from where they were before I filled up over a period of time, like people have described.

Probably won't show up until it's on the road for a bit.

Mine does exactly the same thing if it's been left standing for a while,
but springs back to life shortly after riding off.

With regards to the fuel gauge updating after filling the Tank,
this is explained on Page 34 of the Owners Handbook :

After refuelling, the fuel gauge and range to
empty information will be updated only while
riding the motorcycle. Depending on the
riding style, updating could take up to
five minutes.

If the problem doesn't self-correct after you ride for a while, you may have a defective fuel sending unit (the float in your gas tank).  Mine went bad after about 30,000 miles and was replaced under warranty.
