Cruise Control won't engage caused by sticky rear brake pedal

Took an early morning ride today to take advantage of the cooler temps before it warms up later in the day.

On the way home the cruise control refused to engage.

My first thought was, "Darn - Maybe Consumers Report is right about Triumph's"

Then the bike started acting like it was loosing power and I started smelling brake pad.  Pulled into a gas station that happened to be there just at the right time.   I tried to put the bike on the center stand, but it didn't want to roll easily.

I felt the rear brake rotor and it was hot and then I noticed the rear brake pedal was stuck in the down position.  I pulled it up and then pushed it down and it stuck again.  So I pulled it up and rode home using only the front brake.

After arriving home I removed the R side cover that mounts the foot rest to gain access to the brake lever and found a pebble lodged between the inside of the rear brake lever and the rear sub frame.   I had been riding on a smooth gravel road for about a mile previous to this problem occurring.

So. I'll be checking this spot for any accumulation of debris in the future.

Coincidentally, my Concours had a recall for a similar problem.   Kawasaki re-designed the rear brake pedal clevis that secured the brake lever rod to prevent a similar problem from occurring.

    I saved the pebble :

Thank you for the heads up!  Glad you were able to make it home and pinpoint the issue, which was easily fixed.

Yaga :  You are welcome !!

Ya, I thought I was in deep do-do at first.  But it was only a 15 minute fix and I'll be ready for it again, next time.

Not something you think of normally, well spotted and shared  :028:

Mount the pebble in a bit of old brake pad and hang it round your neck to ward off the evil gravel, it has done for me before and I didn't get off so lightly  :164:

Previously owned a K1200GTSE that was notorious for picking up pebbles and creating panic particularly if pulling away at an intersection and suddenly no power to clear oncoming traffic !!! Once stopped, thankfully after a few depressions on the rear pedal and occasionally picking the offender(s) out I was able to continue. All sorts of thoughts do race through your mind - mainly $$$$$  :161:  before this simple fix clears the problem. Thankfully no harm done to body or steed STJIM

I have to fess-up :  This may have been my karma coming back on me ......

I decided to follow a HD Rider and that's how I got on the gravel road.   He must have wondered why I followed him and the car in front of him down the gravel road.  I had already gone off my usual route home from where I stopped for breakfast before I reached the gravel road.

So I was able to see some country I have never been before and the gravel road was nice and smooth.  I imagine I could have picked up the pebble ( or nail for that matter  ) on a paved road, too.

I'm going to buy another cheap pick & hook set at Harbor Freight tomorrow.  A pick can reach into that space w/o removing the cover, BTW.  For $1.79 ( plus tax ) it may be worth having on the road.

I installed the Knight lower pegs and also adjusted the brake lever a bit and wound up with the rear brakes dragging just a smidge.  The cruise would not engage and that was my first "oops" clue.  Once I adjusted the brakes a bit more, problem solved!
