Top Box 12v Socket

Hi Guys,

Daft one, but i have purchased the attached pic.

Did have one before, however it died, my question is, if anyone has done anything similar and if so what did you do to keep the plug from popping out whilst driving ?

Try an elastic band around it that's what I've done

I would look to see if it’s possible to upgrade it to a Hella socket - much more reliable than a cigarette lighter socket 👍

The opening in the glove box that the cigar lighter socket is installed through is way to large for a Hella type socket to fit and secure in place, and it's also too small for a double USB socket to fit.  I've tried both, and finally surrendered and re-installed the OEM socket.  There's a whole bunch of comments about oversized sockets that have been put in some Mercedes' over the years on the internet, and if it's there, well then you know it has to be true!  Point is we aren't the only ones that have experienced this, and I have yet to find anyone that makes a slightly oversize plug to fit those sockets.  There are 2 retaining holes in the sides of the socket that would allow the plugs spring loaded keepers to hold it in place.  Problem is, most plugs with the keepers have rectangular keepers that are too long to fit in the receptacles openings.  I almost Dremeled out those openings so that the keepers could click into place and hold a plug securely, but was just so tired of the whole thing I gave up and now use some of my other power sources instead.

An elastic band ( experiment with different sizes ) is probably
the cheapest and most effective answer.

Don't be tempted to change the Socket for a Hella type
( like the one by the Rider's Knee, and for the Pillion where fitted )
even though they are more secure / vibration proof,
and chop the plug off your Charging device and replace with a Hella plug,
without first checking .....

USB runs at 5 Volts, so there will be a step down circuit somewhere
to reduce the 12V from the Accessory Socket, down to the required USB 5V.

This circuitry may be enclosed within the exisiting Plug,
or it may be inside the USB Outlet box - If it's in the Plug
and you remove it and replace with a standard Hella Plug,
then the full 12V will be pumped into that USB box and couldl fry it !

  My personal choice, open the plug, it's usually simple enough. If there is any circuitry in there (commonly a buck convertor) put that USB outlet aside to use in a car. Search for another version that the step down is done in the module and wire it directly in parallel with the socket supply via a 5A fuse. Putting an Econoseal 2 pin in an easy to reach position might also be a good idea.

I use Anker brand adapters in the trunk and in the storage box - I never have a problem with them vibrating out.

There are size/standard differences between adapters - that's why some seem to fit better than others.  I had written previously about this.  But if you're not in the mood to look for it, take a look at the wikipedia link for an explanation.
