    Hello Everyone,
    i have just tried to remove the rear brake pads on my trophy and one of the brake pins has rounded off and i just cant get it out and the brake pads remian in situ. My local triumph dealer can't book me in for another month to get it removed so does anyone know of any tricks to get it out.

    A rounded off Allen key hole of one of the Brake Pad Pins
    won't be easy to remove, but I would start  by removing the
    complete caliper from the bike.

    This will need the Brake Line disconnecting,
    so expect some spillage of Brake Fluid and protect
    the Paintwork - which Brake Fluid will destroy !

    Give the Head of the Pin a good soaking in WD40 or similar.

    There isn't much "meat" on those Pins, to try drilling
    and using a Screw Extractor ( "Easy Out" ), so if you do try that
    you need to be very careful not to damage the Caliper hole.

    Preferably use a Bench Drill with the Caliper securely fixed to the Drill table,
    and a suitable size of left handed drill bit which, after the WD40 soaking,
    may help to unscrew the Pin, assuming the Bench drill has a reverse action.

    With the Caliper off, you may also find that if you push the Pads apart,
    pushing the Pistons back into the Caliper, the gap between the Pads
    may open up enough to be able to grip the shaft of the pin
    between the Pads with a good set of grips and turn it that way.

    A new set of Pads will be required if you get WD40 on them,
    and you may end up needing a complete new Caliper,
    Pins and Pads if you can't get it out !

    Pin Part Number : T2020966 ( Kit of 2 Pins ) - Around 9.00

    Looks like you need an engineer!

    If the caliper is off the bike, you could post it to me.
    Just as a little bit of comfort, if you think a new Trophy caliper is expensive, I have just got 4 pins out  of a pair of Range Rover front calipers. New ones were a very salty price of 1800 each. Ouch.

    You know a friendly engineer (we're not all like that  :164:) you're quids in  :152:

    Even properly mounted / supported on a pillar drill, they are not easy to drill out and as Coconut says, there isn't a lot of meat at the threaded section. Don't waste your time with "EasyOuts", there will be so little material left that they will tend to expand the remains into the thread and make it even tighter. You could try warming it up with a heat gun and knocking the next largest Imperial size (might be 1/4" I forget), there's no guarantee that it's seized on the thread though, it could just as easily be corroded between pin and body in the parallel sections or the shoulder jammed against the thread bottom, mechanics have a habit of a) not applying any grease & b) over tightening them, don't ask me why I've never had a pin come loose.

    Caution with heat as any more than about 80C and you'll have to replace ALL the rubbers, in reality I think you should be looking at a caliper rebuild to be on the safe side.

    Don't despair, these Nissin 27mm Two Piston sliding carriage calipers are common to many bikes, not just Triumphs, where they were used on almost all T300's, Trophy, Trident, Sprint (fitted to front left) and many newer models. Used 1215 were coming up quite frequently on eBay but none currently showing. Worst case scenario, find a used one 1215/T300 caliper and rebuild it to swap out, even with all new seals / boots, red rubber grease, banjo bolt, copper washers, pins, pads and even stainless steel pistons, you'd be looking at under 130.

    A method I often use is to MiG weld a Allen key to the seized pin Use a damp cloth to protect the calliper, while welding. Then put the calliper in boiling water to remove salt deposits and to heat up the calliper and very carefully turn clockwise very slightly, then counter clockwise it should then come out without any drilling risk of damaging the calliper. I often use a MiG welder to remove stuck bolts pins etc. If it was not a calliper you could heat the thread area with a gas torch to remove the rust but on a calliper it would be boiling water. I would also recommend a seal rebuild afterwards. The last time I did this was 5 year ago on my ST1100 Alternator bolts which had not been out for 20 years when the bike was built and were Allen bolts just behind the rear wheel and all 3 bolts rounded out because the bolt heads were rusty and it cost me 3 Allen 3/8 sockets from Halford's but it worked.  :028:

    Just not enough space there to be confident of not melting alloy. Brake disc screws seem to be made of chocolate on newer bikes.
