Small crack in headlight - Anyone used adhesive to prevent creeping?

Hi all, Im after some help or advise from the collective.

I have a small crack in my headlight which appears to have started with a stone chip (see photos) and Im trying not to spend 365 for a new headlight, instead i want to see if i can repair it. The crack is about 1 (2.5cm)..

I believe the headlight is plastic/acrylic and was wondering about the following:

    1. Does anyone know of a plastic /acrylic adhesive that will seep into and prevent further crack propagation?

    2. Would a glass windscreen chip repair kit (available on eBay for example) do the job or is that likely to melt the headlight?

Furthermore if anyone has experienced this and found a cure Id appreciate your input.

    Many thanks.

I'm not so sure that there is an easy way to repair that crack.
For what it's worth, I picked up a crack in my headlight almost two years and 25,000 miles ago, and it hasn't expanded at all.
I have thought about adding a headlight protector, but figure at this point, the damage has already been done...
I should probably keep my eyes open for a used replacement.  :084:

    By testing, nothing is lost.

Technical crack creep prevention is to find the extreme ends of the cracks and drill a small hole to terminate the stress raiser but in this case I'd say DO NOT do that for what should be obvious reasons.

Cracks will only propagate if they are stressed, the lens on these bikes is only there to seal out the elements and serves no other purpose, so apart from relatively minor vibration it's unlikely to "creep" unless manually stressed.

While additional over covers are a good idea, it's unlikely to help in this case, other than preventing damage from another event.

There are a few "Seek & Seal" products on the market, Ambersil 5005A Transparent Sealant is just one. I can't recommend one for this application as I've not had to do the same myself. What I would say is if you do use any product like this, try a small dab on an inconspicuous area out of the illuminated areas before applying to the cracked area. The reason is there are so many materials and products out there, it's impossible to have any certainty it will work without an adverse reaction, many have an Acetoxy component.

If you do go ahead, after discrete testing, I'd clean the crack with IPA (I have cleaned mine with IPA without damage) and blow it with air while still wet to remove contamination.

Then I'd recommend you apply a headlight protection film across the whole light unit, there are plenty of those if you do a little searching for yourself, as well as the custom cut items there some you can cut to size yourself and are inexpensive. The benefit of this is that it will provide an additional seal over the cracked area, it will help dissipate force from minor impacts and if the worst happens it will hold all the damaged parts in place and possibly allow continued use until it can be replaced. If the film does get damaged or cloud with age, simply replace it.

    Thanks Hackle,

I couldn't locate them through a google search.  Apparently their new name is "Where's ZED?".  I did purchase a cover from them.  Supposedly the last one they had in stock.
