Steering Head Bearings
« on: September 12, 2021, 10:07:42 pm »
Anyone convert from the OEM ball bearings to tapered roller bearings ?

I usually do a conversion on my bikes when the first bearing lube is due.   I'm planning on doing that this late fall or winter.

Just wondering if anyone noticed an improvement, or any other difference, if they have done this.

Unless I am very much mistaken, the Trophy already has taper roller bearings top and bottom. I will say that in the past, I have been very much mistaken several times!

You may be right.  I haven't had mine apart yet to find out.   I only looked at the parts fiche and they seemed to be ball bearings.

All Balls sells a tapered roller bearing kit and that also made me think the OEM used ball bearings.  I'll find out eventually if someone can't give me a definitive answer.

Coconut :  Thank you !  That's nice to know.  BTW, the All Balls kit is listed at $37 USD.

EDIT:  Something is interesting here .....  In the above pic, it's obvious the two bearings are different sizes, but in the Hermy's fiche, for that that part number, 2 are shown required.  How is that correct if the top & bottom bearings are different sizes ( ???? ).

All Balls pic is different than the above pic - looks like the top & bottom bearings are the same size in the All Balls pic :

It could be that they have used a generic photo rather than the one specific to the kit, I often see that with vendors that supply the same part for many different bikes but it pays to be cautious  :038:
