Hardknott Pass, Lake District - is it do-able ?
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:02:40 AM »

Hello everyone

We're off to the Lakes this weekend and I'm wondering about the Hardknott Pass.  What are other people's experiences of it?  How hard is it for 2 newbies on a Trophy?  I've read lots of conflicting reviews.  :187:

Do it no problems. I ride solo but went over there a few months back had a great time. Did it from the Windermere side then dropped down to Ulswater then onto penrith and A66 to scotch corner.

The bike has good torque and brakes.

Enjoy and let us know how you went on.

Rinose pass would be interesting on the over side of Windermere. That can put some cars to test  :008: but even so I would try it on the bike.

Have fun

Yes great route, narrow and steep in places but the best vehicle to do it on is a motor bike.

Done it often in car and the road in lots of places dissapears below the bonnet.  Would be fun on a bike I think you would have to be 'positive' Riding it.  I am just outside the lakes next week.  But in a car unfortunately (my sister lives there).

Driven those passes many times. Shouldn't be a problem, but:

1. Watch out for potholes and gravel
2. Try and pick a quiet time. Early in the morning is good; you don't want to get stuck behind someone who doesn't know what they are doing!

Best vehicle for the pass so far: MINI Cooper
Worst vehicle for the pass so far: Austin Montego estate 1.6  :114:

Hello everyone and thank you for the replies.  In the end we didn't do Hard Knott as there were just too many other roads to ride - so probably go ahead next year and do it with an early start as suggested!
