Dartford Tunnel WARNING!!
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:11:11 AM »
Morning all,

I know that there aren't many members around this neck of the woods, but as the main access way to get to the euro tunnel or the ferries, I thought I would let you all know...

Whilst I would find it hard to believe anyone law abiding member of the forum would ever do this, the temptation to go over a solid white line and/or filter through a tunnel can be very overwhelming at times, especially behind slow moving cars  :233: and in a wide-laned tunnel like Dartford!  :182:

BE WARNED: Over the years, it seems that (or maybe on purpose) they have repainted the white lines over one-another time after time and they are extremely raised. So much so, that they are quite dangerous, especially if you go between the 2 lines between cars because there is literally no room for error! Just a gap the same width as your tyre between what feels like a gully!  :005:

It goes without saying that I have obviously discovered this "through word of mouth" *coughs*, :164: but thought it would be worth sharing.
...on an old 900  :164:

I used to tell the kids that the double white lines down the middle of the road was the bike lane  :152:

I would normally agree...

Let's say for the sake of "discretion", you are allowed to travel over the lines if you have due cause/lone lane is blocked etc... Obviously, this is exactly how I found this out, but they became extremely dangerous - very quickly!!

Hope you all keep this in the back of your mind if you head down this way. Ant I fear that they are more shockingly - INTENTIONAL!!  :233:

Actually, there are a few occasions when you CAN cross a solid white legally ( UK Law )....

This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

Not many adjoing premises or horses in the Dartford Tunnel  :008: ...
but you do get the occasional stationary ( broken down ) vehicle,
or road maintenance vehicle travelling at less than 10 MPH,
which is obviously how "someone" found out about how awkward they are to cross on 2 wheels  :028:
