    Top Box Photo Needed

    Hello,

I'm hoping someone can snap a photo of their top box for me from the side.  I need to see where the backrest cushion on the top box is in reference to the rear edge of the seat.  Right now if I take a straight edge from the back rest to the seat I'm about 1" (2.5cm) from the back of the rear seat.  I'm guessing that should be exactly even with the back edge of the seat.

When I bought my 2017 it came with an unmounted top box from a Sprint GT that the previous owner never got around to fitting to the bike.  Part #A9930090.  I was able to make it work with about $10 in various spacers, washers and bolts, but after taking my 12 year old son out for a ride yesterday apparently I have it situated too far forward and all I heard was complaints from behind me about him being pushed forward. I mention that he is 12 because I'm not exactly sure how much is the box position and how much is 12 yo complaints just to complain.

As a side note anyone who can find a sprint box because they no longer make the trophy box should pick one up.  The sprint top box is smaller so I do lose some storage vs the trophy box, but it looks decent on the bike and the retrofit wasn't that difficult to make it work.  Also I know it isn't the most secure, because my key actually locks and unlocks the box without changing the barrel.  But for just keeping honest people honest it is perfect.

Is the Trophy sliding carriage mount for the top box on the bike?  If not that could be the problem with where the box you installed is located.  If the previous owner had never had a Trophy top box there's a good chance that the mount for it isn't on your Trophy, and it is required to mount the OEM box.

The sprint box has a different bolt pattern that the standard trophy mount won’t work with. It has its own mounting plate and plastic carrier bracket that the box slides into and lock in with. My only adjustment is to move the metal mounting plate and redrill holes to adjust the placement.

Here are the photos of the bracket for reference if anyone needs them. The sprint also has a large metal bracket that mounted under the rear seat. But that piece had to be scrapped since it didn’t line up with anything on the trophy.

Please ignore the zip tie that you can see in the photos. That was my safety chain if anything rattled loose on the test ride after installing it. I just haven’t cut it off.

As requested, here's a side view of my ( Trophy ) Top Box mointed on the Trophy sliding carriage :

I don't have the original Trophy pillion seat fitted, my seats are "Russell Day Long" seats,
but you should be able to judge the position of the Top Box forward edge
by referencing the silver / grey coloured bodywork immediately to the rear of the pillion seat,
which will be the same on any Trophy.

    Cheers  :821:

Based on that image I need to go back almost a full inch if not more.

The issue is that the Trophy top case has attachment points at the front edge of it that engage the rack that's made for it, so it's capacity is rearward from the front edge of the rack.  The case you are using attaches more toward the mid point of the case and you may not be able to move it rearward with losing support on the existing rack, which is not really designed for a case to be mounted.

I see exactly what you are talking about Trophied. I think because of the smaller top box size I can get it shifted reward at least 3/4”-1”. If you look at the last photo of the bracket from the top view you can see the bolts and washers that I have surrounding the bracket. I can do one of 2 things. Put the bracket behind the bolts and sandwich the bracket between the 2 sets of washers where the leading edge of the bracket is against the back edge of the bolt and then drill a hole for the rear bolt that you can see to lock everything in.  That would get me the greatest shift rearward. The more secure option would be to put two new holes into the bracket as close to the front edge and put the bolt fully through the bracket. Much more secure but costs me a 1/2”.
