Do I have a bad battery?
    on: Nov 04, 2022, 08.26 pm

The bike started fine, and I went for a very short ride.

I tried to start the bike 30 minutes later and it would not start. It made one sort of loud click sound almost like the sound came through the speakers. Then nothing.

Let it sit for a few and tried again. Same click and on the third try nothing at all.

    Sound like the battery?

    Thanks all!

The symptoms you describe could be due to low Main battery voltage,
but could also be simply due to the Battery terminal connections
not being clean and tight, so check those, or it could be due to
corrosion within the Main fuseholder ( next to the Battery ).

Any decent motorcycle shop will be able to test the Battery, and advise if it needs replacing.

If the Battery voltage is Low, try and work out why ?

It could be because the Battery is failing, or it could be due to a lack of output
from the Alternator to keep it charged, so that also needs to be checked

If the Battery tests good, then suspect a faulty Starter Solenoid ( just forward of the Battery )
or loose Solenoid terminal(s) or even a poor connection at the Starter motor.

All of the above assumes that you have had the Ignition Switch Wiring Safety Recall Inspection carried out !  :164:

Let us know how you get on.  :169:

    Cheers  :821:

    Thank you, Coconut.

I will start sorting it out.

I appreciate Coconut's suggestion, but I'd be looking at how old the battery is. If over six years I think you're up for a new one. Another thing is, do you keep the battery attached to a battery tender when the bike is not in use? Just asking that's all. :028:

You should test the condition of the battery with a voltmeter, it should give at least 12 volts, also try if you turn on the ignition once and press the horn and see if it makes a normal or poor sound.

The click you hear next to the speakers is from the starter relay (solenoid) which is just below the right speaker and behind the battery.

Once these checks have been carried out, and if it is correct, it could be another problem, such as the relay that is under the seat on the left, some wiring or even the starter motor.

But first rule out if the battery is bad.

My original battery which was replace under warranty due to the radio software issue lasted years, because I never let it sit for long without being on the battery tender, and I only replaced it because it was losing just a bit of voltage overnight and I was about to leave on a long trip.  I don't tend to have battery issues on most vehicles (knock on wood!) because they tend not to sit unattended for long periods without something connected to maintain them.  Low voltage on the Trophy does funny things, like it does on most things these days.

    Thanks for the input, everyone!

It was just a dead battery. Starts strong now.

Had to go with a slightly different battery due to it being the only option at the moment. Its 310 amps I believe. Any issue with that you think?

The battery originally specified for the Trophy was a
    Yuasa YTX20L-BS, 12 Volt 18Ah and 270 CCA.

I've always found that Halford have plenty of availability of these,
and often at the best price !

What was the "only option" you had to go for, and where from ?
