    Hello again all. I don't think I have been in this forum for a few years or so. These days, I have too many motorcycles to keep busy in all the associated forums.

    I enjoy my four electric motorcycles the most of all, for most of my rides. So I am now mostly active there in the electric motorcycle forum where all four of my electrics are covered.

    Anyway, today, I took my TTSE out for a ~100 mile /~161 km ride. Cold and windy today with a lot of snow on the ground. My TTSE is my favorite bike in such cold, wet & windy conditions which is saying a lot for somebody who owns 11 motorcycles that all run perfectly.

    But around 75 miles into the ride today, my Engine Malfunction light came on along with the traction control light. I was in 6th gear but the display said I was in first gear. I could tell I was in limp mode, but I discovered the bike rides very well even in limp mode. But the lack of normal acceleration was noticeable, but not by all that much. Tach showed normal 6th gear RPMs with the display saying I was in first gear.

    I stopped the bike, turned the key off, waited a few seconds, then back on, and all went back to normal except the MAL Engine light was still on. Gear indicator and TC light was back to normal, and I was no longer in a limp mode.

    When I got home, I got my Dealer Tool Out and checked the MAL codes:

    P0705=Gear Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction.
    P1698=Sensor 5V supply, circuit malfunction.

    Then I cleared the codes and started the bike and no more MAL engine light.

    I have not yet gone on a test ride since clearing the codes, (it's now night and dark here) but I think it's all just a onetime fluke and nothing is really wrong.

    And I cannot do a test ride for a couple of days because rain and snow is coming.

    So for now, I can only talk about it. I cannot really say if the MAL light will come back on, but I expect not.

    Has anybody else here had these two codes together?

     I had the same today. I do not have the dealer tool to clear codes, so I am waiting oh so patiently( ha!) for your resolution. I have been under the impression that the dealer tool is only available to dealers, not grubby American shade-tree mechanics. Snooty Brits! Anyway, suggestions welcome. Thanks!

    In my case, a simple turning the bike off and on cleared the MAL light. The dealer tool was later able to show me what the codes were, even though the light has cleared. The codes stay in memory. Most codes require the bike to be turned off and on several times to clear the codes, as long as the problem is gone. Perhaps your codes will clear by themselves after the bike is turned off and on a few times. I am not sure if it requires the engine to be started or not with the TTSE. But normal driving could clear the light, at least if the problem is no longer there.

    For the dealer tool, see here.

    If you refer to the information I posted about DTC's here :

    Servicing Data, Reference Info. & DTC ( Fault ) Codes
    ( Scroll down to the message dated Mar 11, 2015 : "Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC's ) / Fault Codes" )

    ... you can see the criteria for the MIL Light being extinguished, and the DTC cleared from Memory.

    This is usually 3 "No Fault" starts to extinguish the MIL, and 40 "No Fault" starts to erase the DTC from Memory.

    According to the Service Manual, a "No Fault" start ( or "warm-up cycle" ) means :

    • The coolant temperature must be raised to 72 Deg C or more
    • The coolant temperature must have risen by 23 Deg C or more
      from its start temperature, when 72 Deg C is reached
    • A controlled power down sequence must take place

    The DealerTool device is an After-Market device that anyone can buy,
    not to be confused with the Triumph Dealer's diagnostics equipment.  :028:

    Cheers  :821:

    I replaced the gear indicator sensor a couple years ago because I kept having this problem and turning off the ignition would not reset the gear indicator.  I would get the warning lights but the bike would run normally.  The cruise control will not work while the indicator is shows only 1st gear.  I still get this fault now and then but now it resets when I cycle the ignition switch.

     I tried key off/key on, then disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes. still had the light. A little while later, I started it to go back to work and it went off after it was running for maybe 2 minutes. Today it ran fine, no light. I make two trips back & forth to work each day. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to change the gear sensor? If it becomes necessary. Thanks!

    As Coconut said, a few starts without the fault code will clear the yellow light.  The gear sensor is pretty easy to replace.  I think the instructions are on the site.
