    Phone mounts and power supplies

Currently, I've got a ball mount in the left side mirror boss and a QuadLock for my phone. No power to it. This is now proving to be less than ideal as a big day out with music piped into my helmet sees the battery die off by mid-afternoon.

I've been looking at options for getting power to the phone and I'm liking the look of using the QuadLock stem mount with their own USB power adaptor (I can't face giving them all that money for the wireless and then having to provide a USB fee to THAT as an extra).

I suppose this means I would have to remove the stem cap and drill it to take the stem mount. I don't know if the stem cap is deep enough to provide sufficient bore length for the stem mount to fit. Alternatively I could tap the stem cap to take the M8 thread of the ball mount, if the end of it is thick enough to take the thread.

Another alternative would be run a wire up to the phone where it is but I'm not too keen on having the cable there in the breeze, swinging about from lock to lock.

Has anyone else used the Stem Mount? Or any alternatives for a neat powered install?

So I have a tank based mount with the quadlock and then I just run a cable from the left side glove box to it.  Since mine isn't mounted to the bars and the wind protection is so good I don't have any issues.

I have a RAM mount on my top yoke and the RAM wireless charger, works great for my Samsung S20. You can just see the cable exit bottom left of charger then its routed with all the other cables in the bundle on left bar and then through a hole into the left hand glove box and into a USB port in the 12v power. No mods required other than drilling a hole in the right place in the glove box liner and fit with a rubber grommet.

The original owner of my bike had fitted a RAM mount ball cap on the top yoke, looks like a factory part. Not sure where he got it from ?

SP Connect also has a wireless charging mount, but it does require their case which is very good, and a USB power source.

    Hi MrB1967,

I went for the super expensive but really works well solution.  I needed no vibration and maximum power to my iPhone without power into the phone jack water ingress problem.  My solution is a Juiced Squeeze https://hondogarage.com/products/juiced-squeeze-wireless-charging-phone-mount and a Buzz Kill https://hondogarage.com/products/buzz-kill-vibration-isolator

I just checked my receipt and I paid $197 for the Juiced Squeeze and $52 for the Buzz Kill, this is shipped to UK.  At the time I used my bike as a National Escort Rider for cycle events and needed kit I could rely upon and this never let me down during extensive use all day in very poor wet weather conditions.  I would end the day and my phone would be at 100% charge all without a waterproof cover (iPhone 12 ProMax) also after about 50,000 miles no phone camera issues associated with iPhones in a vibrating environment.

I have always been an advocate of buy right, buy once and this is a perfect example of that.

    Just my $0.02 worth.
    Love, light, and kindness,

    Dave

Yes, some phones do require vibration protection.  Samsung's up until Galaxy S22 series I know for a fact do not.

This is the SP Connect wireless charger before I mounted it to the steering stem nut that was drilled and tapped to take a threaded Ram ball.  SP Connect DOES NOT make an anti vibraion mount that will adapt for our application.  I bought one and tried everything just as a precaution even though it wasn't necessary for my phone.  I used the SP Connect mount because the back of their case that attaches to the mount is a flat profile 90 degree twist lock and slides in and out of a pocket like it isn't there.

Wow Dave that's a serious setup!

I've gone for the Quadlock stem mount with their wired USB adaptor. Just waiting on a mate to put a 16 mm hole in my top nut.. Oh for a lathe of my own..

I'm slightly concerned about weatherproofing but it doesn't seem like an insurmountable problem. Surely someone sells plugs to go in the vacant USB female for when it's not in use? Or a bag always works  :034:
