Rusting at silencer/muffler joint with exhaust

I removed the muffler today to take the wheels off. (Going in for new tyres on Monday) took a fair bit of effort to separate the muffler from the exhaust under the bike.  On separating, bits of rusted metal came out. On closer inspection the end of the exhaust pipe where it clamps around the muffler pipe is badly rusted.  As can be seen from below. Of the six "tangs ' that get clamped around the muffler pipe. Only 2 or so remain.  When the clamp is on, you can't notice, but at some point the remaining tangs will rust and the two sections will not be joined tightly.  A new front exhaust no doubt is expensive.  Has anyone seen this before and come up with a remed. Would it be possible to weld a section of tube on to repair?  My bike is a late 2014.

I may have a solution after ordering a union from Amazon.  I'll update on monday if it works.  Ultimately, it would only be a stop gap for a few years at most but I'll stay it and see how it goes.

OK, parts I thought might work came today, and I think it worked out alright.



Exhaust clamp, paste and fibreglass role.

SO after measuring and allowing for a wrap of the fibreglass tape and exhaust paste, I replaced the muffler with the new longer exhaust clamp.  It worked a treat.  The clamp is about 5 inches or 13cm long with two substantial tightening bolts.  After tightening everything up its very solid.  I was able to utilise a substantial part of the exhaust tubing that had not rusted, to there is a good tight clamp on both components.  Its all well hidden under the bike, so cannot be seen unless you look for it.  When the shiny metal tones down, it will barely be seen at all.  I'll give the pipework a good polish once the paste has solidified.
