    Thoughts on this oil leak?

I noticed oil around the sight glass last summer.    Upon stripping the bike for its 20K mile service (yeesh!) I can see its a significant weep.  Its never dripped.    I assume the cover with 4 bolts above to the right is the oil pump?  I read the oil and water pump are in the same housing?

My guess is that cover is the source as there is oil above the sight glass.

That Cover with the 4 bolts is the Balancer Cover :

World of Triumph - Trophy Engne Covers

It is correct that the Oil Pump and Water Pump are a combined assembly - they cannot be separated.

Access to the Oil Pump is via the Sump, after removing the Fairings, Exhaust down pipes, and then the Sump  :012:

Thanks Coconut.   Is it typical for the sight glass to weep?    I'm wondering if that weeps if there is enough airflow / turbulence past it to spread oil around like that.    Or do you think it's the balancer cover gasket?

I can't recall anyone ever having reported oil leaking or weeping from the sight glass, or from the Balancer cover.

There have been plenty of reports of oil leaking from the Sump gasket,
particularly when the bike was new, as a result of the bolts not being tightened at the factory !

The only way to tell for sure is to clean everything thoroughly,
then run the engine without riding the bike it ( no air flow )
in the hope that you will then be able to see where it's coming from,

    Cheers  :821:

Ok thanks again.   I'll clean it up and check sump bolt torque, and let it run a bit before I button it all back up.

You probably won't see much after cleaning & then running if the problem is only a "weep".

I would wait until it starts to leak more before replacing any gaskets or o-rings.

Maybe simply checking for any loose attachments and tightening if you find any a little loose might cure the weeping and save some work.

Does the oil level at the sight glass change much between oil changes ?

No the level doesn't change.    It's never left a drop on the ground either.

I checked a couple sump bolts and they seemed pretty loose.     I'll clean it up and retorque all the sump bolts and just keep an eye on it.

    I appreciate the input!

Sump bolts were all a bit loose, timing cover bolts were half finger tight and half snug, balancer shaft cover bolts were barely finger tight, so with all that I'm surprised it wasn't hemorrhaging oil.      Most of the side cover bolts on both sides were not to torque.

    I appreciate the advice!
