Invitation for a speed awareness course !
« on: October 12, 2013, 09:23:48 AM »
I had the privilege of completing a driver awareness course this week, it was quite interesting and to a point worrying. They showed a clip to test your attention levels, I have attached this short clip in which there are 3 people with white shirts and 3 with black shirts messing about with a basketball and you need to count the amount of times the ball is passed with the white team. Only 2 of us out of the 20 in the group got both parts correct ( your'l see what I mean when you watch the clip )

selective attention test

The second clip shows in KPH the difference driving less than 5 MPH faster how long it takes to stop.

"Slo-Mo" TAC Anti Speed TV Ad

Its all quite interesting made me ride slower on the way home till I had a row of cars right up my ....

I've seen the ball passing one before - and was suitably impressed at the tme.

After watching the second clip I'll definitely be more aware of scientisits and the like
who step out in front of me to make a safety video, and distract me from the juggernaut crossing my path  :153:

Seriously though - Remember that slogan "Speed Kills"  ?

It's not Speed in itself that kills, more accurately, and amongst other things,
it's "Stopping VERY fast by hitting something" that Kills  :159:

Force increases exponentially  with speed,  but I still travel fast.

However one of my reasons for   getting the TT is that it has anti lock brakes .  The other issue with speed and motorcycles is that without anti locks you can't slamming on the brakes as you risk locking the front tire.

At a motorcycle event I watched an ex motorcycle  cop,  stop his anti lock equipped BMW 1200 RT in under 50 feet from 50 mph.   It was impressive and why I never allow anyone to tailgate me.

You can apply a tremendous amount of braking without actually locking the front on bikes with no anti-lock.  You have to squeeze and be smooth in your application.  I've actually lifted the rear going into turns too hot before.  Here's a video of me on my 07 GSXR at NOLA Motorsports park in New Orleans last month.  Riding on the track makes road riding seem like slow motion.  I highly recommend it if you have the opportunity!
