San Fran to Denver.. How long?
« on: November 25, 2013, 10:21:47 am »
Ok our trip is entering the serious stage and I am hoping someone can give me a timing estimate for San Fran to Denver through Yosemite. We plan on doing this in August 2014. We don't want to rush it and I just wanted to double check if its worth going through lake Tahoe or heading straight to Yosemite. Also how long should I allow in Yosemite?

Thanks
Simon

Three long days if you don't do much stopping. The west side of Lake Tahoe is especially scenic, especially in the Emerald Bay area.  Going through Yosemite will take a little longer, but is more than worth seeing. How long you spend in Yosemite depends on how much you want to see. I could spend a month there, but it will take several hours just to drive/ ride  through on highway 120  (and missing most of it).

Both places are worth seeing.  Nobody will disagree. So you have a choice to make, or take an extra day to see both.

Very true.  And if you at all have the time after Yosemite keep south to Kings Canyon <(maybe) then on to Death Valley (certainly) then pick up interstate 15 to interstate 70 and run over to Denver.

Only crazy people go to Death Valley in August.  That's why each time I went there  in August, I had the place to myself .  .  .

Best to go the Death Valley from  around now to January or so. Not mid summer!

Thanks very much Don & W8 I really appreciate your advice and input.
We love stopping along the way to see things so I am getting the feeling about 2 weeks for this part of our trip would be about right going through Lake Tahoe with maybe 3 days in Yosemite. Will have to think about Death Valley.
Is highway 70 the best for Colorado or should we go to Durango and head up to Vail?

I've done both, I prefer I-70.

Here is a photo I took on I-70 in Colorado:

The Yosemite area is very crowded with tourists in the summer. Don't let that bother you, there is a reason for that! But what I am saying is make your plans well in advance concerning where to stay and such. For some places, it might already be too late for August! It's always full everywhere in the summer in that area, especially in August, the most busy month of all.

Looks great Don, highway 70 it will be then.
The thing for us is we plan on flying to NY from Denver and heading up to Canada from there for 2 weeks, so we are thinking about the weather up there also. Maybe better to do that first then fly to Denver and ride the other way to San Fran in say the first 2 weeks of September?
