Sena smh10 and pmr? Any options?
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:14:42 PM »
I'm looking to get a pmr radio for bike to bike. Anyone got experience or advice with using something like the midland g8 bluetooth pmr with the smh10 headsets?

Although I am not familiar with the Midland G8, I have used my Sena SMH10 together with the Sena SR10 to operate both the Midland 75-822 CB or the Motorola MR256R GMRS/FRS portable radios. It all works pretty well, although the SR10 does go into standby on the Bluetooth link to the SMH10 after about 10 seconds (adjustable) of inactivity and thus it may take a moment for the connection to be restored when a transmission is first received after the link timeout.  Sena has a variety of interface cables for the SR10 to connect to Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, Midland, Motorola, and other radios, including a cable with bare connections for non-supported radios, including various ham radios. I often ride with several guys here in Florida who all have CB radios, but I much prefer the GMRS radio since the FM audio is better than AM.

Thanks Don, I will take a look at the SR10 module.

I will also keep looking as some PMR's now come with Bluetooth as well so negating the need for the SR10.

thanks again for your insight.

There are indeed some radios supposedly with Bluetooth capability, such as the Yaesu FTM-10R/E for amateur radio 2m/70cm operation. That unit's Bluetooth accessory is still listed as "available soon." Depending on the frequencies and regulations, you may not be legally allowed to used that radio unless you're a licensed amateur radio operator in your country.

If possible, I would certainly recommend that you test the radio's Bluetooth for compatibility with the Sena SMH10 or the new Sena unit coming out soon, the 20S, before buying. If you do find something, please post the information to this thread.
