Iphone music controls?

I hope Im just a bonehead, and can't figure out simple functions, but for the life of me I can't seem to operate the on board music controls. I don't see the explanation in the book or on screen as to 'Play', Pause', 'Stop' for my music through my 5s. I can change tracks, and the P button starts things playing. The manual says if I press the -Vol button and hold it will mute and shut off the system. Am I missing the obvious or is there really no basic iPod/music controls?
