rain repellant on windshield and helmet visors
« on: March 01, 2014, 07:24:48 am »
Hi everyone

I have been trolling the web and looking at various water repellent products. I am using "Mr Sheen" at present and have to test it properly before I can make any conclusions.

I did come across a US Product "raincoat repellent" all the reviews had positive response and it is designed for plastic polycarbonate materials.

Q. Has anyone used this product and their response review
Q. does anyone know if it is available in the UK and where.
Thanks

seadog

Hi seadog,

As ever Ebay has the answer : Rain Repellant

Also available from Visorvision.co.uk

Personally I use "Nikwax Visor Proof" - available in the UK from various outlets -
Good for visors and plastic/ acryllic screens, and costs around £6 for a 125ml spray bottle  :028:

If you have it over there, I recommend Plexus. Works great.

In Aus I use a product called Rain X.  works well in dispersing rain off the visor and windscreen, without any effect on the plastic.  Only works for a short period but it does work.
No such thing as bad weather - just inappropriate clothing.

Be very careful when using products that are marketed
for use on glass windscreens as some of them contain
chemicals that can discolour plastic / acrylic screens
and / or make the plastic go brittle and prone to cracking  :005:

Unless the label on the bottle specifically states it CAN be used on
plastic / acrylic screens , then it's probably best to avoid them  :028:

As usual, Coconut raises a valid point.  Over on the BMW K1600 forum there was a long discussion of that exact problem and the reasons for it.  I have seen somewhere an aftermarket windshield manufacturer recommending against any glass cleaner type products, I think I recall it causes yellowing and induces brittleness in some plastics.  Not being a chemist I couldn't tell you why, I just know I will never use anything that isn't expressly recommended.
