Dealer Tool and Windows 8.1 problem..
« on: May 27, 2014, 04:42:04 pm »
Purchased Dealer Tool a few months ago, was running on a Windows 7 Starter  Netbook...

got a new laptop, came with Windows 8.1..    DealerTool installed ok but when run pops this error... (attached)

I've checked for Windows Updates after the DealerTool install and there are none available, all indicates up to date..

I had the network disabled while installing...

anyone installed OK on Win 8.1 or have a way to solved this issue????

Is the cable connected while you're running the program? It should be. I had strange errors on mine if the cable was not connected to the computer, however, I never tried it with Windows 8.1.

If it's not compatible with Windows 8.1, you might try running Oracle VM Virtual Box from Windows 8.1 and then load an older operating system to run from Windows 8.1.  I use it here  to run old 16 bit programs from Windows 7 64 bit, by running Windows XP from Windows 7, 64 bit.  It should work on Windows 8.1 as well.

VM Virtual Box has worked out very well for me, with programs that are NOT compatible at all (otherwise) with the Windows 7 64 bit. It should work with 8.1 as well. You will probably find many other advantages of VB as well, when trying to run older programs, as well as other incompatible programs,  from newer operating systems.

Well, that makes me feel really dumb.    As soon as I connected the cable the error disappeared...  Thanks!!!!!!

By the way, DealerTool responded quickly too my inquiries, though the did not ask it I had the cable plugged in, probably ASSumed a 'thinking' homo sapiens would have done that....

Attaching a support doc I made from DealerTool tech support.   I did have one of the USB devices with the wrong driver.   I just clicked on "Update Driver" and chose the proper one...

I use Virtual Box as well, but with windows 8/8.1 you have another alternative as hyper-V Manager is built-in.  I use it on my 8.1 desktop and it works well.

Jan.... Fantastic! Thank you so much for this document. I FINALLY have my Dealertool working after many frustrating attempts to get it to communicate with my bike. Your post finally enabled me to sort things out.
