Pirelli Angel ST Tyres - CHECK THEM OFTEN !
« on: June 03, 2014, 10:11:18 am »
I have been made aware that the Pirelli Angel ST tyres fitted to the back wheel of many Trophy's from new,
can "suddenly" wear out, i.e. one day they appear to be fine, with plenty of tread depth,
then within the next few miles the steel brading can become visible, as in the attached photograph (  :005: )

It's oviously illegal ( UK ) to ride with a tyre like that, risking Points on your Licence and a Fine,
but it's also potentially DANGEROUS !

On the limited information available this seems to occur at around 6000 or 700 miles or so,
give or take, and depending on riding style, loading etc, so the best advice
is to check the tyres a lot more frequently than you might be doing now !

Looking at the attached photograph, and also a different tyre on a different Trophy yesterday,
I'm wondering if these tyres have been built with the steel braiding too close to the outer edge of the tyre ?
On the tyre I looked at, the depth of tread pattern nearest the centre of the tyre
was still just above the UK minimum legal tread depth  :084:

I noticed on my 1900 mile trip that the back tire is miss-formed.
Looking at the back it "bubbles" in the middle and then flattens out a little to the edge of the tire.
My friend said it was wearing poorly.
I originally thought it was the profile of the tire and I wanted to look that up, but he said it should be round.
The picture you posted shows a bit of what I am talking about but mine are worse.

Plus the low air pressure light came on yesterday.

I assume the tires are covered under the warranty because of wear ?

I think there is no warranty for tyre after 6000km unless you receive an advertising from manufacturer. I received one few years ago from Dunlop due to defective tyre.

I hadn't problems with angel st and st spec. A. Usually riding with 2'7 and 2'9 psi pressure that goes up to 3'1 and 3'4 after few minutes twisting the throttle.

Pressure you ride on?

It is not as severe as I thought, but you can see the bulge.

I run what they recommend.
42 PSI
The TPMS usually shows 41 PSI and goes up as I ride.

The first picture looks like exactly the same issue that K1600 owners were having with the Metzeler Z8's.  They would look fine, go off on a day or two trip and suddenly at a fuel stop, cord showing.  Lots of unhappy Beemer owners over the Metzeler's and the poor lifespan.  Problem is, out on the road, it isn't always easy to find a replacement tire at a nearby dealer in the 190/55 size if you need one in an emergency.  I don't ride aggressively and changed K1600's at 6000 miles, but they were definitely wearing in an uneven pattern, especially the front.  I'm thinking when it's time for tires I may go to the PR4's.

Mine looked the same when I have replaced them after 8600 kilometers. The area aside of the middle was on some points less than 2 mm so I changed earlier than the middle section was worn. The Bridgestone T30 have a groove cross the middle section, so it will be easier to identify a worn tyre, that was my argument against Angel GT...

I replaced mine early at 11,000kms or so after reading comments like this.  I am used to tyres that don't do the disappearing magic trick towards the end of their life.

This is only 4000KM. At this moment looks good.
