BMW RT recall.
« on: June 05, 2014, 05:24:27 pm »
I see BMW have told all riders of the 2014 RT with ESA to stop riding their machines and contact their dealer immediately. Sounds serious! And here was me having a moan about a recall for the Trophy ECU. I think I've made the right choice after all!

According to "Motorcycle News" magazine 5th June 2014 :

BMW has issued an urgent instruction to all owners of 2014 BMW R1200RT owners fitted with
the Dynamic ESA electronic suspension system to stop riding their motorcycles with immediate effect.

The problem concerns the rear suspension system and the potential failure of the plunger rod assembly inside.
The instruction to stop riding motorcycles only relates to the 2014 model of the RT;
the bike with the updated water-cooled boxer engine that was launched just a few months ago
and only those models with the Dynamic ESA suspension option fitted.

A statement from BMW reads:
"We regret to inform you that with immediate effect all 2014 R 1200 RT with Dynamic ESA must not be ridden.
At this moment, we cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.
"Customers of affected machines will be contacted by their dealer immediately and asked not to ride their
motorcycle. Whilst this is extremely disappointing for our customers their safety is BMW Motorrad's priority."

BMW dealers are currently contacting the 500-or so UK owners to explain the situation
and work out how affected motorcycles will be fixed.

I traded in my 2001 RT when I bought my trophy back in july of last year and a couple of weeks ago I received a letter from BMW telling me of another safety recall for the RT. As has been said before Triumph are certainly not the only manufacturer with recall's, I would be very mift if after paying 14 or 15 grand on a bike I was told I couldn't ride it.

But as with Triumph they are doing the right thing....

A problem has been identified and they are fixing it....

It is all any responsible manufacturer should do...

Shouldn't this thread be in the Two Wheeled Chat forum as it is not Triumph related.  I'd rather this not become the default forum for every post

Sure does but as this isn't Triumph related I think it more appropriately posted in "On Two Wheels - Bikers Chat".  perhaps the admin will be kind enough to move the thread.
