Garmin Zumo 590LM
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:11:41 pm »
Just spent the afternoon swapping out a Garmin 660 for a Garmin 590. The 660 is being donated to my other half who has just had his fail!

Thought initially Garmin may have been nice enough to make them the same cradle so I could just pop the 590 in place. Unfortunately, this isn't the case so took a little longer dismantling all the cockpit to be able to swap out the old cradle for the new one.

However, job now done and very pleased. Fits perfectly on the standard Trophy CNC sat nag mount without obscuring the clocks.

The bigger 5" screen is very clear and bright even in direct sunshine. There aren't any problems with the windscreen when parked. The design has gone back to the much better design of having the USB port for updates readily available under a rubber flap rather than having to open the battery box.

Has a number of great features, especially for those of us with the Virb camera as I can now control the Virb camera and set up the shot on the sat nav screen. Also a number of smartphone apps that allow you to hunt for an address in a browser and 'throw' the address across to the 590 as a destination.

Overall I give a big thumbs up for it.

Thanks for the post and pictures. I wasn't sure about getting the 590, but after seeing that it won't require any modifications to the OEM mount, I've got one on the way. Being able to mount it in the car as well is just icing on the cake. Now if I could only find a non-vibrating spot to mount my GoPros...

Yes, finding a non vibrating point on a bike can be so difficult!

I have attached a ram ball mount to one of the windscreen mounting bolts. The Virb camera mount then attaches there when I need it.

Cropbiker, did you find a convenient place to put the 590's USB connector? I'm still waiting on one part, so I haven't taken it apart yet, but I guess I'll zip tie it to something, just not sure yet where.

At the moment I just have it coiled and zip tied up and attached under the glove box..... I did think about cutting a hole into the glove box, passing it into there and then having a second USB connection but for now I don't need one.
