Trunk came off on the road!
« on: October 02, 2014, 05:03:36 am »
This happened to me this morning as I was on my way to the gym.  It was still dark and I hit a pothole.  The resulting jolt knocked the trunk off of the bike and onto the roadway.  The motorist behind me stopped and blocked the traffic so that I could go back and retrieve the trunk.  It did not open but the top is destroyed.  I ordered a new colored cover today.

My question is this.  Has anyone had this happen on their bike.  The dealer had not heard of any issues with the trunk coming loose after a sudden jolt.  I know that the trunk was secure I had ridden over 160 miles the day before.  I do not believe that I had the trunk locked as I normally just put my things in and close the lid for the short 4 mile ride to and from the gym.  I don't believe that I had it locked the day before either.  Just curious if anyone else has had their trunk come loose on a ride.

No this hasn't happened to me after going over pot holes, rough roads etc. I always lock the Top Case (trunk) out of habit.

Nope - mine has only been off the bike for 2 days in almost 13,000 miles, but no issues ever.  I do remember that it was a bit finicky when I was figuring how to re-install it for the first time.  Hopefully nothing is mechanically damaged, only cosmetic.

Yikes! Let us know what you learn about the accident!
My mother asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said "a biker". She said I'd have to choose one or the other.

I'll chime in here to say that in over 66K miles on my Trophy, the top box has never come off except when I've deliberately removed it. I've ridden over some pretty rough roads and railroad crossings, although missed most of the potholes. I too lock it fully, not just close it. Perhaps the latching mechanism is not as secure in that case.

I have ridden rough roads as well, no issues with the top box. The way it locks on the bike separately from opening the lid is great (ask st1300 owners about top boxes coming off!)

Yeah... have don'e about 14,000 miles.... some fairly rough roads but don't recall any significant potholes... a mix of locked and unlocked but always with the top case in place.... never had any issue with it coming lose or even threatening too.
