battery charger
« on: March 12, 2015, 09:31:25 pm »
Only had the TT a couple of days...could not find the info in the manual...had BMW GS before and purchased an optimate charger with canbus connector...can I charge the battery by connecting the din plug on charger to the engine power socket?...I noticed on my bike there is a connection hanging down from the battery inside the fairing...is this a standard fitting or aftermarket and is it for a GPS power supply or for charging the battery?...there is probably a thread on the site about this somewhere...thanks

If the connection is an SAE type flat two pin connector it is most likely for a Charger.  Mine came with that too, but I have a din plug to SAE for the Battery Tender and I use that in the front socket on the bike, which is live with the key off.  Just don't try to charge a dead battery through that with a Battery Tender, I found out from experience/advice here.  Consult this forum if you have ANY questions, someone here knows the answer (most likely King Coconut - my designation).

Good point Verdun95, could be an Optimate, a popular charger.

Thanks Verdun for that link very interesting....so what I gather is I can use either charging point with the optimate 4 ..the lead with the rubber cover hanging down in the fairing or the left hand engine din plug?.

Correct. The left hand DIN plug will work for normal maintenance charging, but it will be disabled automatically if the battery has discharged going by the experiences of some (presumably to prevent the battery from being deeply discharged if something is left on). I haven't had a flat battery to test this out.

I use a CTEK charger as they can do all sorts of other fancy things for the cars and bikes. I have the XS 0.8 (more like the optimate) and the MXS 5.0.

I believe it has been Triumph Dealer Policy for quite some time now, to fit Optimate Charger Leads to every battery/bike that they Sell.
It's not done at the factory but by the Dealers..
