I never had a problem with any of the luggage lid straps on either of my BMW's nor the Trophy and they are all basically the same.  I guess having had the same thing on the beemers and seeing all the owners complaints about them caused me to be a little more careful how I treat them.  I still think all of them would be better served with small, coated, aircraft cable with keyhole connectors that can be disconnected if need be like on a lot of pickup tailgates is the best solution.  One sturdy low profile stud on each piece for the cable ends and done for good.  Any inventors out there that would care to give it a go?  I could do it but it would likely look awful.  I'm sure there are a lot of riders of different brands that would be glad to have a solution available at a reasonable price, maybe $10 a pair or so.

I did the rivet replacement with a nut washer and bolt and seems to be holding up well.  I am a little late to the dance seeing I did the mod last year.  So this is my initial post and an update all in one.  I recommend it to anyone who uses the boxes regularly.
It may not be legal but I have a Dr's note!

My guess is a spring loaded retractable tether.  This is what HD does with their top boxes.  It is on my project list to convert my top box to something like that.
