rear tire UPGRADE?
« on: May 29, 2015, 09:55:48 pm »
OK  have my nomex fire proof suit on and zippered up tight.   Anybody here jumped to the darkside yet with their TTSE.?? I am setting up mine for a 12,000. mile trip here late summer and have gotten spoiled.  Last 4 bikes,, 2 wings a beemer and CTX1300 had run flats on them .. have not run a MC tire since a catastrophic air loss on 2004 wing.  Will be swapping sometime in next few weeks.

Well I know it was discussed in great length a year or two ago and one member posted some good videos of his trials dark sidings Trophy.

I can't for the life of me find the thread at the moment though.. Nothing coming up on the search with the obvious searches... I will keep looking

I was also about to reply on this, so I will continue.  Yes there was a thread on this. I can understand going to darkside perhaps in the US with those long & boring straight roads. I do know from experience as I used to live in Austin, TX.

We do get some darksiders in the UK but most of them seem to be Goldwing riders, even still a minority.

Good luck on that one and take the risk if you dare.  Not a big risk on those highways I know.

Yes, going to the Darkside is not a common choice over here in the UK and Europe.... Our roads tend to have curves and bends in them! LOL

The basic summary of the trials by the brave forum member who did it was that it was physically possible to put the car tyre on the Trohphy and if all you do is long straight runs then it would save you money but the joy of the Trophy is its abilities in the twisties and losing that by going dark wasn't worth it...

He went back to motorcycle tyres if I recall correctly

If you google tail of the dragon you will see a hot dog driving a yellow wing with a car tire on it he holds the record for wings on the tail of the dragon and did it on a car tire.. remember,, not using a squared off car tire,, hopefully a Michelin ALPIN ,, when mounted and inflated properly is nearly as curved on the edges as a motorcycle tire  just with a 1490 pound load rating versus the 900 pound rating of the most expensive bike tire,, granted this is more important when dealing with full tourers at 1000 pounds   but figure two middle aged adults all 3 bags filled plus a cargo carrier on the trailer hitch   ,,,,,,,,

For sure it was discussed. I distinctly remember commenting on the thread.  However even with a search as general as "tire" and my  user name nothing comes up. I wonder if the Admin pulled the thread, perhaps fearing liability?

Yes... It is very strange that the thread appears to have disappeared.

Admin, has it been deleted?
