Wanted: Advice on Selling my Trophy
    on: Jun 15, 2015, 01.38 pm

I am more than likely going to be selling my 2015 Trophy and would like opinions.  I am considering using eBay, Cycle Trader, or Craig's List.  I am really reluctant to let someone I don't know ride off on my bike so Cycle Trader and Craig's List worry me since they usually generate interest from local buyers.  My bike has been ridden very conservatively and I can't guarantee that if I let would be buyers take it for a ride.  I guess I am leery of "joy riders".

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!!

Firstly sorry you are selling your Trophy. :110:

They damage it they buy it. Go with them. Or trade it thru a dealer get your money let them worry about it.
Don't meet them anywhere and make sure it is a cash deal. Ensure they have insurance to ride your bike. Deal through the day not at night. They know you have a wad of cash and no time to bank it at night. If they ride it you know out of site they are going to open it up. Naturally to see it does what it is supposed to.
The list goes on. May be different laws in the states. IF he comes with someone either ride in there car with him and follow the rider. Or take a big deposit off him before he rides it away. Plus take his licence and ID so he has to come back.
Basically Don't Trust Anyone with your pride and joy

I have sold on craig's list.  I insisted on a motorcycle license and cash left on the table to take it for a ride.  (He left his wife also. :745:)  The ride was the last thing after agreeing to price and I had demonstrated that everything worked.  I did not want someone seeing if they liked an electra glide by riding my bike.

Also a short note signed that in consideration for the test ride, the person claims competence, and releases you from all liability arising out of the test ride and agrees to indemnify you for any liability if they cause damage.

Ebay is problematic because shipping an be a nightmare if you do not do it regularly.

You could try to sell it on this, or another, Triumph specific forum. A buyer from this site will know what the Trophy is all about! Your concerns are why I tend to trade my bikes in.

I have sold bikes on both Craig's and EBay. As far as Craig's ZShyster has it down pretty well. On EBay I set a reserve and ask for a $500 NON -REFUNDABLE deposit from the winning bidder. That seems to keep the bidding among serious buyers. I also stipulated that the buyer is responsible for pick up or delivery. My experience with shipping was a good one.

Depends on where you live, but I have had good luck with the bike in my yard and a good old for sale sign on it.

I agree that trading it in is the best all around IF you are looking for another bike. Of course a Triumph dealer will give you the most trade-in against another Triumph but I digress.

A motorcycle endorsement, cash in hand and insurance verification are musts, even though your insurance would probably be first approached. Have someone go with you and/or ride along with the buyer on another bike if that's possible and only IF, they insist on a test ride.

Also, I had a guy ask me to send a cell photo of the cash to ensure I had it, interesting idea.

Meeting at a public place is great but at your bank is even better. Ensures monetary instrument is good and/or the bills aren't counterfeit.  :430:

Lastly, a lot of communication before is helpful as you get a sense and a feel for the individual before you're face to face with them.

    Best wishes.
p.s. Why are you selling it?

    Inditx,
Thanks for all to great suggestions (to everyone).  Everyone had some really valid points and great suggestions.

As far as why I am selling it - without going into too much detail I would just say "health reasons".  I really hate to get rid of it but I have to do so.

Again, thanks for all the comments and I haven't listed it yet so if there are any more suggestions, please keep them coming.
