Another go at a photoshoot with a Vulcan
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:16:34 pm »
Hi all,

Well some of you will have been with us when we went to see XH558 the last flying Vulcan. Unfortunately, we did not get to have our photo taken with the Vulcan then.

We did manage another event to meet at East Kirkby and see the Lancaster Just Jane and there we managed to get some great photos with the bikes and the plane.

Well I have been in touch with the guys at Wellesbourne airfield Warwickshire where they have XM655 as a ground exhibit Vulcan and there we would get to park in front of the aircraft and get some great photos.

It will probably be a Saturday in August or September, still waiting for some option dates from them. I wanted to gauge what interest there would be in another meet?

All the best,

Kevin

For anyone that doesn't know this year is the last xh558 will be flying so if you want to see it in the air they have a website that has the remaining shows listed on it. I've been to wellsbourne wkth a car forum and it's a good morning out. You get a talk and tour of the plane and get to go up into the cockpit too. There's a bizarre story about xm665. A bloke bought it and had it flown into Wellsbourne with the aim of getting it fit for civilian flight but made the epic error of failing to find out the runway isn't long enough for it to take off on again!

I was at the Lancaster and would try to be at the Vulcan event if I do not have a prior arrangement.  As soon as you have a date I will be able to confirm.

Thanks for trying to organise this, my son and I really enjoyed the Lancaster day out.

Later

Dave

Hi All,

well, I have had some dates back from the Wellesbourne guys and some more details of what happens on a trip there.

Apparently only got 4 visit days left this year

Oct 31
Nov 7
Nov 28
Dec 12

Any one of those being so late in the year runs the risk of inclement weather I suppose but if anything I would propose Oct 31 or we wait until next year. What do people think?

The cost is £10 each and for that you get the following

Visits generally start at 1000 or 1030 and last around 2.5 hours in total depending on the size of the group and would include a group photo opportunity with your bikes under XM655. We have a maximum group size of 24 (so 20 would be fine) and ask for a donation of £10.00 per adult for a visit which includes:

·         Systems Demonstration  (subject to serviceability on the day), which involves putting power on the aeroplane (without running the engines) and operating certain systems, including:
 the control surfaces (elevons and rudder);
the navigation, anti-collision and landing lights;
operating the air brakes;
opening the bomb bay doors.
During this time visitors are escorted around the aeroplane to ensure the best view and opportunities to take photos.

·         A tour of XM655, including a visit to the cockpit, in groups of 4. This covers the engineering aspects of what we do to maintain the aeroplane, as well as Vulcan history and the history of our aeroplane in particular. During the tour, various doors and panels will be open to enable viewing and photographs. There is usually also the opportunity to view the Vulcan from different angles, including from above for those who are happy to climb the steps to the top of our 'giraffe'.

·         A DVD of XM655 will be running indoors. Tea, coffee and merchandise will be available and our volunteers will be happy to talk to visitors and answer questions throughout the visit.

I'd be up for a visit to XM655...as I missed it when I had a Tiger 800 and the Tiger Forum went on a visit last year  :006:

Being ex Vulcan Groundcrew - '75 to '79 - I'd really like to get up-close and personal again with The Flying Flat-Iron  :046:

I have preliminarily told them we will take Saturday Oct 31 and I will confirm end of next week when I have a firmer idea of interest.
