    Petrol smell when hot

    Morning all,

Has anyone else noticed their bikes smelling of petrol? Mine is noticeable when hot and left standing a while, I did the National rally last weekend and a few times I got a whiff. Also noticeable when left in a warm garage. There's no petrol leak but I think the breather is doing a bit more breathing than it should.

    Hi jhibbs,

You might have a very slight petrol leak somewhere - possibly from the Fuel Pump Plate under the Tank,
but not sufficient to show as drips on the floor as it could be evaporating before gettiing there.

You shouldn't have a noticable smell of petrol !

One of our Members in the US ( walker ) had a similar problem
where fuel seemed to be leaking from the Fuel Pump Plate.

It took a very close examination of the bike to find evidence of the leak - smudges or stains, but no real "drips".

Here is the original post - Fuel Leak - Fuel pump plate
Worth having a read although the excellent Photographs that were there seem to been removed,
so you might want to try a "PM" to walker to see if he still has them,
as they would give you a better idea where to check  :028:

    Cheers  :821:

Thanks Coconut, very helpful as always. This does seem very much like my experience, I'll have a look around later. Not as easy as it was now the R&G bars are on but I'll put my patient head on. Alternatively I'll just drop it at Hughenden M40 and let them do it as it'll end up back there anyway.

    Cheers - Jason

The petrol smell has been present on my Trophy since new. In order to trace its origin, I have plugged breather hoses, overflow tubes, wrapped the the filler opening in plastic foil, plugged the exhaust. No luck here so finally removed the complete fuel tank to look for sings of leakage on the quick connector on fuel line to the fuel manifold, all equalizing tubes and fuelpump plate. Nothing found here either.
So that leaves anything downstream of the fuel manifold. To inspect that area the airbox will need to be removed. I did not go that far to get to the manifold so still living with a constant petrol smelly "No Smoking Area"  and my Trophy is banned from the comforts of in house parking. :182:

I'm late to the Trophy parade, but could this be related to the fuel tank recall I've read about?  Problem was supposedly mostly here in the US where temps can get extreme in places.

Triumph shows 2 different pump plates part numbers and 2 fuel tanks.  Just curious.

As far as I am aware the Fuel Tank Recall ONLY applied to US Models, and not the UK ones.

Yes for certain the tank recall applied only to the US.  Different construction from the ROW.

As for the petrol smell I'd be back to the dealer while it was still under warranty.  In fact I would have been back the instant I smelled fuel.

Good point w8d4it, if you happen to have a water heater where it parks it could be life threatening!
