Run Out of Fuel, Again!
« on: August 11, 2015, 04:51:32 pm »
I've gone and done it again :233:.  In one year of ownership I have managed to run out of fuel four times.

A bit like losing a handbag, once is OK but more than once is careless! :138:

In my defence the fuel gauge had two bars showing and 114 miles to fill.  I run the second information screen with Distance to Empty and Distance since last fill ( I always have the TPMS readout in the centre).  I had ridden 265 miles since last fill and put in 26.23 litres so it really was empty.

Each time I run out it always has two bars and anywhere from 65 to 114 miles left to empty so why these erroneous readings?  Any ideas?

I'll go back to refuelling every 200 miles.  My average over the last few months is 48mpg which is about 270 miles to empty which is correct in my experience so why do I always have two bars and a significant distance to empty reading when my tank is dry?  It gives me a false sense of security.

I left with a full tank Sunday morning and came back to town with 264 miles on the clock since the last fiilup, low fuel warning on for the last 30 miles, and I put 5.7 US gallons in to the bottom of the neck.  That left .9 gallons in the tank, and I averaged 45.3 mpg.  I would guess that makes the low fuel light coming on around 1-1/2 gallons.  That's a little less mileage than I had hoped for since my '10 R1200RT got 53 consistently, but I think my right wrist is the biggest problem with the Trophy.  The Trophy's engine has a thrill factor.  :017:

Garmin Dave,

Have you reported this to your Dealer ( and are you still under warranty ) ?

Sounds like you have a faulty fuel level sensor.

Yes.... I would agree your sensor is faulty...

My low fuel light comes on at 60-70 miles range indicated and then I often get down to 30 or so indicated range before filling

To run out with over 100 miles range indicated is wrong

My R1200RT had a faulty fuel sensor and had to be replace under warranty.  It wasn't anywhere near close on the dash display.

I'm one month out of warranty but I did mention the error at my first service.

I'm due a 10,000 service soon I'll let you know.

Mine is also consistent. Fuel light with 4 to 5 litres left, DTE counts down accurately

Dave,

Sorry to hear about you running out of fuel, certainly sounds like a sensor, very annoying all the same.

By the way, is your handbag colour co-ordinated with the bike and part of a new Triumph luggage range?    :745:
