    Charging the 590

A question for 590 owners. What is the best way to charge the unit off of the bike. I have tried using the usb port on the rear but it doesn't charge.  Not very clear in the instructions on how to charge it. X

    Hi animal,

The Installation and Use Instructions explain to connect the red and black power cables
from the Mounting Cradle wiring harness to the motorcycle - see below.

The USB connection is for transfer of data / registering the device on your Computer.

I'm not sure whether the USB connection also provides charging power for the battery from a PC,
but on the Trophy you want to be using the 12v supply for that - as previously mentioned,
either tapped in the back of the Glove Box Accessory socket wiring for Ignition controlled supply,
    or direct to the Battery.

It is a good idea to route the in line fuse holder of the power cable up into the back of the mirror pod,
so the fuse is readily accessible if ever needed - just by swinging the mirror forward out of the pod  :028:

    Cheers  :821:

Thanks coconut, i have already fitted the sat nav to the bike. I did it as you said and used the 12v socket in the glove box. I want to know how to charge the unit OFF of the bike. The USB  doesn't work,  so wondered how to charge it so it is fully charged when i go out. Or is it just a case of letting it charge while im riding x

My 660 used to Charge from the USB cable, so does another Garmin device I have, but it takes longer.

From the Garmin support pages :

There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS device.

    1.     Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS device.
The device will charge while powered-on and using the device,
as well as when the GPS device is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle.

    2.    Use an AC power adapter. Some devices come with this power cable
to plug the GPS device into a wall outlet allowing the GPS device to take a charge.
For devices that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.

    3.   For most devices, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into
a powered-on computer with a USB cable.  This method of charging will be a trickle charge
and it may take longer than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery.
A full charge via USB may take as long as 8-12 hours.
A USB cable is provided with certain GPS models.
For devices that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.

So your 590 "should" charge via the USB connection, it will just take a while !
( If it's definitely NOT Charging by USB I would contact Garmin Support as it may be faulty ! )

An AC adapter is listed here : Garmin Store - AC Charger

Mine charges via he usb connector. I have a 13 amp plug that takes a usb (it came with my kindle, which has the same fitting) and it is fine for recharging the Sat nav if I have been planning routes with it out of the cradle.

I can confirm mine charges via the USB port on the back too.... If yours doesn't I suspect it may be faulty.

Try a different cable first though... It's surprising how often a supposedly Universal Serial Bus isn't!

    Animal,

I do not have a 590, I have a 660.  Also, I do not know how you are trying to charge it.  If you are trying to charge from a computer USB port, some do not provide sufficient power to charge.  Further, some wall chargers only provide very minimal charging capacity.  I would try a few other USB wall chargers if you have not yet done so.

Just my 2 cents.  Good Luck. :821:
