Top Box in Rain
« on: March 24, 2016, 03:03:47 pm »
A few weeks ago I went on a long trip and the last night out the bike got rained on followed by a full day riding in the rain to get home.

I opened the top box and everything inside was nice and dry, however, a few days later I removed the top box from the rack and as I held it from the handle a surprising amount of water leaked out on the garage floor.  I assume that there is an inner and outer shell on the lower half of the top box and that the rainwater had collected there.

Have others noticed this?

I have not noticed that because it barely rains here, but there is definitely an inner and outer shell on both the top and bottom. The bottom shouldn't allow water ingress between the shells, though, as the top inner shell completely covers the joint. Although with water, one never can be sure. I'm thinking perhaps weep holes might be in order?

Just looking at the side panniers and the slots where the handles sit, I bet that they get filled up when it rains too??

You are not alone.  I ride frequently in the rain and exactly the same happens to me with the topbox.  Water does get trapped and I am suprised that the fuse for the power socket located in there has not blown. Water and electrics does not mix.  So far, no harm done

Can't say I noticed this with rain but if I wash the bike with the top box in situ then it tends to hold a lot of water and when I move the bike or top box the water will pour out.

Its surprising how much water manages to seep into there...you only notice it when you lift the box off the bike, and it starts dripping all over the floor

I so rarely take the boxes off the bike I can't say I've ever noticed.... That could be the solution! :001:
