Origins of Trophy name
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:27:58 pm »
I rode down to the National Motorcycle museum near Birmingham last week and was disappointed to find there is no dedicated motorcycle parking, as in most places - who decided that one?  Wouldn't have been a problem but the car park was filled by delegates attending the attached conference building. However the museum itself is well worth a visit and whilst browsing I came across a Triumph Trophy TR5 (1948 - 1958) the earliest Triumph I understand to be called a Trophy. Apologies if anyone has already posted this.
On researching it appears James Dean bought one - it's the bike he is sitting on for those famous photos. Also the Fonz's bike in Happy Days was a mildy customised 1949 TR5.
So surely that makes the "Trophy" a very cool bike to own.  :017:

Hopefully here is a photo of it in the museum [smg id=1509]
Life isn't a dress rehearsal so enjoy it.

The "Trophy" name was first used by Triumph in recognition of the trophy-winning performance of the "Speed Twin" models in the 1948 Six Days Trial competition.

The "modern" Triumph company has been using those names from the past ever since .....

This Forum has a "History of the Trophy" Page.
There's a Picture of a TR5 and others including
my own previous model Trophy 900 in British Racing Green  :002:

Cheers  :821:
