Hiding place for spare key?
« on: May 27, 2013, 09:14:43 pm »
I've never had a motorcycle key with a chip in it.  In the past, I've just cut the rubber off one and stored the flat spare key in my wallet.  Can't do that with a chip hidden in the rubber, but still want to have a spare with me when traveling.  Also in the mix, the manual warns to not keep the keys together or they will interfere with the sensor's reading.

So, where on the bike can I hide a spare key, away from the headstock and accessable without tools?

I wouldn't keep a spare key on the bike at all. Put it in a riding coat or give it to a buddy on a long trip.

I'm with clarge on that one. I wouldn't think it a good idea to ever keep a spare on the bike itself.  Surely you have room in an extra pocket? Or if you are the type to wear jewelry then make necklace out of it.  Think of it as a motorcycle dog tag

I only took the spare when touring and in that case Sarah had it in her jacket.

I know one of the european breakdown insurance companies said they would not do anything if you lost a key and had not taken a spare.  A friend yesterday dropped his car key into the river when getting off his boat and the aa would not come out even though he had key insurance as he did not carry a spare.  When touring abroad we all swap keys.  I put my spare on a neck strap. This also means others have the padlock keys as well especially helpful if someone over sleeps! It does mean when they eventually get up they ,might find 10 chains on their bike!

It did mean a quick dash 180 miles across  to Ely with a spare set on the trophy.  Roads were surprisingly quiet for a bank holiday.  Well nothing got in the way!  I really enjoyed the torque when overtaking.
