Problem Opening My Development's Automatic Gate

    Guys:

I came across a problem I need help with. I rode the bike for the first time this evening since returning from the dealership on Saturday. I live in a gated community without a guard, so the gate is automatic. This posed no problem with my Rocket, which always triggered the gate to open but the Trophy, for some reason, isn't activating the exit gate. I had to wait for a car to pull up behind me in order to get out of the development.

What can I do to correct this situation? I wondered if it was also going to be a problem at traffic activated traffic lights, but I hit one coming home and the bike triggered that without any problem.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance.

What sensor is used to activate the gate. Weight? Light, Motion, Infra red.... hard to suggest an option without knowing that.

Does the gate operate for bicycles? pedestrians?

If it's an induction loop type like the ones many traffic lights have, you can ask the development if they have a sensitivity adjustment they can modify (many do). Also, you can try lining yourself right up parallel to the lines (i.e. stop over them), rather than between them (you should see cuts in the pavement where they laid the wire, roughly as a square -- ride directly over either of the two verticals parallel to your direction of travel rather than between them, if you don't already of course).

As an aside, why on earth does the community bother with a gate that anyone can open? I mean, ignoring the fact that gated communities have the same crime rates as their surrounding communities, what is the point of a gate if anyone can open it? Just curious what their thinking was.

I think it's the exit gate that opens for any traffic he was talking about.  Ours is the same way, but the entry gate either needs an opener or a code number entry on the keypad to get in.

If, as suspected, it's an induction loop buried under the surface,
then it will be triggered by ferrous material, such as the steel chassis of a car passing over it.

With so much non-ferrous material on the Trophy ( Aluminium / Allloy wheels etc )
there probably isn't enough steel to activate it.

You could try shaping a sheet of steel fittted somehow
into the bottom of the Fairing to see if that would work ?

It reminds me of a guy I knew whose didn't have a Key Card for his Works Car Park.
He carried an empty metal tool box in his car and had it timed to perfection -
he would drive towards the pole barrier, and without even stopping would open his door
and scoot the toolbox along the driveway, under the barrier,
and trigger the "Exit" induction loop - opening the barrier, and he would then drive in !

Though I have no experience with such gates, I've been told that a strong magnet can help trigger an induction loop. A rare earth element magnet, like a neodymium magnet that can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot, somewhere on the bottom of the bike may do it.

Good luck and let us know the solution to your problem.

My mother asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I said "a biker". She said I'd have to choose one or the other.

Well, actually, it's the shape of the TT. Think of a stealth bomber all angles and curves! The TT just doesn't register with the radar installed at the gate, the waves simply slip around the TT; thus, you are effectively invisible to such devices. Look at the bright side, feel free to put the hammer down on the motor way, for the Police Radar cannae see you!  :028:
