    Welsh Rally 2017

Did this event yesterday. Despite the early morning gloomy weather the rain held off all day. Saw a fair few Trophies. If you saw us we were 2 couples, both on blue Trophies. A little over 300 miles of beautiful North Wales roads and scenery to get the gold award.

Really well organised by Clive Motorcycle Club  :046:. Recommend it to anyone for next year.

    Cheers
    Brian

Is this a yearly rally? Where exactly?

I've just come back from North Wales in a camper van funny enough,....Touratech normally have a rally going on this time of year, I've been to it twice over the years despite never owning a BMW or off road bike. :008: It's a pretty good event.

It is an annual event organised by Clive Motorcycle Club, starting and finishing at their base in Castle Caereinion, near Welshpool.

    http://www.clivemcc.co.uk

You choose your own route visiting the required number of checkpoints depending on which award you are going for - Bronze, Silver, Gold (us) or Platinum. For gold we had to visit a minimum of 12 unmanned checkpoints, answering a question which you needed to be there to find the answer (e.g. what is the phone number of the public call box in the village, or what is the date above the door...) but which was easy once you were in the location, and also 3 manned checkpoints where your control card was stamped. Food and drink was available at the manned controls.

We planned a route in North Wales which included manned controls at Caernarfon, Harlech and Ruthin and unmanned controls all over the place from Anglesey Eastwards. If we do it next year would probably go to South Wales where many of the controls this year were in the Brecon Beacons, but also down into Pembrokeshire.

    Hope that helps.

I forgot to mention that unlike the English National Rally everybody starts and finishes at the same location, and there is a good selection of hot food in the evening, and bacon rolls and the like in the morning.

I like the sound of this ... sort of a treasure hunt (ish) and clues! What a shame I've only just read this post after the event, we love riding in Wales 😄

    There's always 2018 Carol!

Been some posts on the organisers' Facebook page, one of which praised them for the different locations of controls every year, unlike the English and Scottish equivalents. I can't confirm as I only did the English once, but the basic map of controls we received for that did look pretty much the same as the previous year's. Possibly inevitable when all the controls are manned, many for nearly 24 hours.
