Sheared off Gear Shifter Pivot Bolt

Rode out to Salvation Mountain north of El Centro, California today and much to my surprise, lost my shifter going from 6th to 5th gear.  Pivot bolt sheared right off flush to the bike.

Rode 150 miles back to Triumph of San Diego stuck in 5th and they quickly fixed it with a set of left handed drill bits and a new pivot bolt.  Mechanic said he's been seeing a few of these happen to Trophies and Explorers.

Happy to have a good dealer and a bike with gobs of torque!  Definitely not ideal, but never stalled it or felt like I was burning up the clutch.

This should be a re-call for all models with this useless design and Triumph rethink a more workable set-up!

It's not as though they've never designed a simple foot pedal pivot before. :233:

I'm wondering, have any of the bolts with the grease grove been snapping??

my shop used a different part numbered bolt so i'm hoping it contains the grease groove.  even my mechanic was surprised at how skinny the pivot bolt is.  gotta go easy with my big feet.   :034:

minor irritants here and there but i'm still in love with this bike after 1 year and 10k miles.  so versatile... tank bag for day twisty trips, side bags for overnight twisty trips, top box for commuting and lane split splitting, and all four bags for long distance adventures!

only gripe is hinckley should stock more parts in ga or provide a loaner for warranty work.

Well a little update/warning for you chaps on the this bolt with the grease groove, last couple of days I noticed that the gear changes felt a bit tough, there was still plenty of grease in the groove when I removed but it look at the section that's closest to thread. It's almost been a year since I fitted this bolt, probably done no more than 5000 miles within that time,....it's cleaned up OK so I've re greased/re fitted it. Just don't assume that this grooved bolt is a fit and forget item.

Thanks for this update Steve  :028:

Certainly one to watch, for those with the capability,
meanwhile I would urge everyone with such an issue,
to contact Triumph After Sales ( email : after.sales@triumph.co.uk )
to let them know about it  :169:

Triumph's Policy seems to be that there is no problem, if they don't know about it !

That's fair enough I suppose, so consider making sure they DO know about this -
especially as they have already modified this part once, but the modification,
in earthman's experience, doesn't seem to be preventing the Part from corroding,
and may result in further cases of the pedal siezing onto the shaft, and then breaking.
