30,000 Mile Service with a surprise

    Hi,

thought I'd share my recent experience at Newcastle Triumph.

I took the bike in on Friday for it's 30,000 mile service, the bike is 18 months old so has six months to run on the warranty.  I was told it needed a new front Bevel Box as it was making a noise.  I had not noticed any untoward noises but had mentioned it 'rattled' a bit on tick over.

Triumph approved the 1,600 part and 3.5 hours labour to fix it immediately when asked by the dealer.  All very good but I do worry about cost of unit replacements for small cost parts.  I presume the noise is a bearing.  I had a new rear drive on my last Trophy under warranty again over 1,000 for a leaking oil seal.

I wonder when I don't have the luxury of a warranty if I can get things repaired more easily or if in fact there are no serviceable parts and big lumps of metal have to be changed for relatively low cost item failures?

I looked into buying an extended warranty which was about 400 for one more year from effectively an insurance company; I wont be taking it up.  I think I would have used the lack of warranty argument with SWMBO to get a new bike but I cant get a Trophy now and I don't want a BMW!

    Love, light and kindness,

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

You're really in a bind which I don't need to tell you!  I would be scared not to fork out the 400 pounds based on the atrocious costs to procure parts and labor on items I have never heard of before to keep your Trophy going. I have gotten the impression that in the UK you can't buy really extended warranties.  I think I paid $1200 for a 5 year warranty past the 2 year regular warranty offered by Triumph.  This is not to add salt to the wound my friend.  As Benjamin Franklin once said "penny wise and pound foolish".  He was one our founding fathers and this basically relates to investing a little now against a very large expenditure in the future.  I certainly wish the best for you Dave in whatever you decide.

    My Best Regards,
    Gary

    Dave,
You are making me feel lucky.  40,000 miles and the only issues has been with recall items and computer updates.  I did however buy the extended warranty when I bought the bike.  That was more because it being a brand new model in the first year of production, luckily I haven't had to use it.  Jim

    Buy the extended warranty!!!
I did and have already recovered the cost in rotors replacement at 2.5 yrs, 20k mi.
Also, any work that requires tupperware removal is very costly in labor fees.
I now have 42k and I'm told all the valve shims need replacing.

:046: Great for you on the extended warranty! I look it as insurance which provides me with peace of mind and security.  I'm an ex-insurance adjuster and am insurance poor.  I saw too many folks who were not insured properly.  This was  my 2 cents worth.

    Best Regards,
    Gary

    Update.

They changed the front bevel box and it still sounds like a bag of hammers!

I thought it was the 'normal' triple rattle but the Triumph Newcastle dealer is convinced it is something that needs more attention.  I have had their new Street Triple for a few days now and I'd love to see how stupid I look on it as it is tiny and I'm not!

    I'll keep you posted.

    Love, light and kindness,

    Dave

Dave, I've had a street triple, Bobber, Tiger 800, Sport, Thruxton, scrambler and a 900 Bonnie, which I quite like for filtering while they they sort out an oil problem on my 40,000 mile bike. Quite enjoying it the variety!!
