DFDS Seaways discounts?
« on: June 28, 2013, 07:39:04 am »
Hi all,

I am planning a Norwegien trip in August but max I can get off work will be an 18 day stretch so how to get there without wasting too much time.

No direct ferry to Norway from UK that I can find so looking at Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark and then another ferry to Kristiansand in Norway.

For a rider and bike they want £190 return, not in itself too bad. However, they insist you have a cabin each way, fair enough, it is an 18 hour trip, but they want £300 each way for a twin berth inside cabin. Sailing on Cunard with a balcony cabin, full board they don't charge that much per night!!!!!  :233: :233: :233:

Could seriously dampen my enthusiasm for the trip.

Anyone know any ways to get a discount from DFDS Seaways or any other sensible way to get from UK to Norway without an extra 1,000 miles of riding?

Do they no longer do Newcastle to Bergen or Stavanger?  I have done that trip lots of times.

Not that I can find!

There appears to be a freight ferry that goes Newcastle to Brevik but only two runs a week and limited space! :003:

We also used to go to gothenberg and drive up to Oslo. Not a bid drive.

They used to do couchettes but it is a pain without a cabin.

OK that ferry does not run anymore!  Either!  I used to go to Stockholm a lot and used the ferry to Gothenburg and drive across to Stockholm.  Not any more by the looks of it.

It's really annoying. I have planned out a great route round the west coast of Norway, along the Atlantic highway and down through Lillehammer, Oslo and Goteberg but it is going to cost a small fortune!  :003:

Just had a look at the DFDS Booking Site -  :172: Ouch !

You could try seeing if they will take you and the bike on their commercial crossing -
they have route from Immingham ( nr. Grimsby ) to Brevik,
so you'd have to modify your route plan a bit...

I've not travelled with them, so have no idea what it woudl be like,
and I haven't got a clue how the prices compare, I just came across this by "Googling" !
I don't know for sure if they even handle Motorbikes or not, but it must be worth a phone call :
Details on their Web Site :  DFDS Freight

Sorry, yes that is the freight ferry I meant. immingham not Newcastle. Spaces limited, slow crossing, not much difference in cost, not sure how they would handle bikes! :003:

Hi cropbiker,
You are right about DFDS being a ripoff! I booked about a month ago, a return journey on the Harwich to Esbjerg, 2 people, 1 bike, outside cabin, 2 breakfasts, 1 evening meal, approx. £760. I think it gets dearer the later you leave the booking. Motorcycle News used to do discount vouchers for them but I couldn't find any this year. In August we are off to the Danish Triumph owners club rally then onto the FIM Motorcamp.          :151:
